Judge Manning, a 1967 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, was an associate judge of Cook County Circuit Court from 1979 until 1986, when she was elected a circuit judge. She served on the Illinois Appellate Court from 1987 to 1994, when she was appointed to the federal bench.

The event will begin with an 11:30 a.m. reception and 12:15 p.m. luncheon and program. Call Tamra Drees, (312) 554-2057, for reservations.

She will be honored during the association's annual dinner at the Hilton Hotel, Lisle, where Cynthia Bronson is installed as DAWL president. Call (630) 221-0802 for reservations.

An honored civil rights advocate for more than a half-century, Leighton graduated from Harvard Law School in 1946 and practiced in Chicago until his election to the Cook County Circuit Court in 1964.

Appointed to U.S. District Court in 1976 by President Gerald Ford, he served until 1987 and became of counsel to Earl L. Neal & Associates. He has chaired the Supreme Court Character and Fitness Committee and the Illinois Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

Among Leighton's many honors is his induction as a Laureate of the ISBA Academy of Illinois Lawyers. He has received the Earl Burrus Dickerson Award from the Chicago Bar Association and the Thurgood Marshall Award from the American Bar Association.
