Details listed for ISBA travel to Ireland, Alps

Global Holidays has announced full details on two fall travel programs being coordinated for Illinois State Bar Association members. Each program will have separate departures from Chicago and St. Louis.

Brochures will be available soon in ISBA offices. Call (800) 842-9023 for more information.

Coast of Ireland

"A hundred thousand welcomes await you in Ireland," said Bloomington attorney S. S. "Joe" Schneider, chair of the ISBA Committee on Membership and Bar Activities.

"Witness for yourself the spectacular coastal and mountain terrain, castles and shamrocks," he said. "We invite you to experience the charm and friendliness of the Irish people."

A pair of nine-day fall tours in Ireland are scheduled Sept. 7 to 15 with departure from Chicago, and Oct. 12 to 20 with departure from St. Louis. The price is $1,169 per person, double occupancy, plus $78 in government taxes and fees. Singles may sign up for $1,419 each.

Included are round-trip charter air transportation on an Omni Air International DC10-30 non-stop to Shannon, Ireland; seven nights in first class hotels with full Irish breakfasts daily, and deluxe motorcoach travel with experienced Irish guides.

Tour destinations include County Limerick at the head of the Shannon estuary, where every nook and cranny hold ancient castles, magnificent cathedrals and delightful medieval architecture.

County Waterford reveals evidence that Vikings, Normans and the Anglo-Irish all have settled in the countryside during past centuries. The mile-long quayside is lined with blue, yellow, pink and white houses.

County Kerry near the southwest coast is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and many colorful lakes. Historic Tralee is noted internationally for its Rose of Tralee Festival, and Kenmare is a sprightly market town with a panorama of hazy mountains.

Several optional excursions are available to the Cliffs of Moher and Burren Region, Galway and Connemara, Bunratty Folk Park and King John's Castle, the Ring of Kerry, Blarney Castle and Cobh, and Dublin City with dinner at Edward Langton's. Special event include a medieval banquet and a traditional Irish Ceili evening.

Switzerland/Austria

Dates of the nine-day "Best of the Alps" tours in Switzerland and Austria are Sept. 1 to 9 with departure from Chicago, and Sept. 29 to Oct. 7 with departure from St. Louis. The tentative cost is $1,199 per person, double occupancy, plus $62 in government taxes and fees. The rate for singles is $1,449.

The round-trip charter flight non-stop to Zurich, Switzerland, will be on an Omni Air International DC10-30. Accommodations in first-class hotels are for four nights in Seefeld, Austria, and three nights in Adelboden, Switzerland.

Other features include daily buffet breakfasts, deluxe motorcoach transportation between the airport and hotels, a scenic transfer from Seefeld to Adelboden via Vaduz, Liechtenstein, and services of a professional guide.

"The well-known towns of Adelboden in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland and Seefeld in the Austrian Tyrol are ideal locations for visiting the area's highlights," said ISBA committee chair Joe Schneider.

Adelboden is a chic-but-cozy resort in a community of flower-lined streets, chalet-style hotels, hiking trails and cable car rides. The exclusive resort of Seefeld, an Alpine playground with golf course and casino, attracts an international clientele.

Tour options in Austria include the royal castles of Bavaria, a Tyrolean evening of music and dancing, features of Munich and the Dachau concentration camp, and Mozart's Salzburg and the mining town of Rattenberg.

Options in Switzerland are a journey through Swiss peaks and lakes to Interlaken and cog-train trip to Kleine Scheidegg, a Swiss mountain buffet, the Ballenberg Open-air Museum and Lucerne, and Zermatt and The Matterhorn.

Departures added to meet Prague, Vienna response

Due to the overwhelming response from ISBA members for the fall travel program that includes a Danube River cruise and stops in Prague and Vienna, Global Holidays has added a sixth departure from both Chicago and St. Louis.

The additional tours will begin Monday, April 30, and conclude Thursday, May 10. Call (800) 842-9023 for information about making reservations.

"Due to the uniqueness of this program, space is filling very quickly," said Jeannette Kay, vice president of Global Holidays. "There is limited availability on the original departure dates."

Time periods for those other 10-day tours of Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic are April 18 to 28, April 20 to 29, April 24 to May 4, April 26 to May 5, and May 2 to 11, all with both Chicago and St. Louis departures.

The cost is $1,949 per person, double occupancy. Features include round-trip air transportation to Frankfurt, via KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, with return flights from Vienna; eight breakfasts and four dinners; extensive sightseeing by private deluxe motorcoach, and services of professional guides.

First class accommodations with private baths include three nights aboard the MS Wilhelm Tell cruise ship, two nights in Prague, and three nights in Vienna.

Mediterranean cruise

A Mediterranean cruise will take place in May from Lisbon to Barcelona aboard the four-masted, 148-passenger "Wind Star" sailing vessel. Call Carrousel Travel, (800) 800-6508, for details.

Discounted prices of $2,975 per person, double occupancy, apply to upper passenger deck cabins, and $2,850 p.p.d.o. for lower passenger deck cabins. These prices include everything - ground transfers, seven nights on the ship, all on-board meals and port charges except round-trip airfare, which is $675 on KLM.

Travelers leave Saturday, May 12, from Chicago to Lisbon and board the ship Sunday afternoon. Ports of call include Portimao on the southern coast of Portugal; Tangier, Morocco; Marbella, Spain, on the Costa del Sol; Ibiza; the Balearic island of Menorca, and Barcelona on May 20 for the return flight to Chicago.

A pre-cruise Lisbon city tour option is offered from May 10 to 13, with accommodations May 11-12 at the Four Seasons Ritz Hotel. The price is $495 p.p.d.o. An optional post-cruise Barcelona city tour option is available from May 20 to 22, with two nights in the Hotel Le Meridien. The price is $450 p.p.d.o.

Novack's vacations are education opportunities

Most attorneys maintain aspirational dedication to continuing legal education. If a practical seminar gets one's attention, it may be given at least earnest consideration, if time and travel permit.

But few attorneys carry the CLE quest to the extremes that Chicago attorney Stephen Novack (pictured) does. Learning more about the law has become an integral part of most of his vacation itineraries.

A partner in the 16-year-old litigation firm of Novack & Macey, Novack has explored courtrooms, monitored trials, observed legal systems and visited law offices across the United States and in Europe, Israel, Canada, Mexico and Caribbean islands.

Wherever he goes, Novack's passion for his profession beckons him to a greater understanding of the similarities and differences of legal procedures throughout the world. He also has accumulated a remarkable collection of courtroom photographs.

"I am simply fascinated by the law," he says, "and that extends far beyond my work," although his breadth of legal knowledge is as asset in the firm's practice as litigation counsel to some of the country's largest corporations and law firms.

A magna cum laude graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, Novack and his colleagues have earned a reputation for hard work and creative solutions. Name partner Eric N. Macey is a magna cum laude graduate of the George Washington University Law School.

Since they formed the partnership in 1984, Novack and Macey have concentrated on the academic records of lawyers who have joined the firm, which now numbers 19.

"A record of academic achievement is a pretty good indicator that you're dealing with someone who is careful, disciplined, and used to excelling in a competitive environment like a courtroom," Novack said.

From the outset, Novack and Macey envisioned an aggressive, fast-response litigation firm with a small staff that could respond quickly and decisively. "We always planned to keep the firm small, so that ideas don't have to be vetted at every level," Macey said.

As big law firms get bigger by acquiring small firms and practice groups, Novack & Macey is content to be a litigation boutique. "We like being David to Goliath. David usually wins," Novack quipped.
