Charley Popejoy of Wheaton headed DuPage County Bar Wheaton attorney Charles Popejoy, a past president of the DuPage County Bar Association, died April 15 at age 90 of cardiac arrest in his home. A 1939 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, working at the Union Stockyards to pay tuition and expenses, Mr. Popejoy practiced with the Chicago Motor Club until World War II. He was an Army first sergeant in Europe and saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. Returning to the Motor Club after the war, Mr. Popejoy left in 1950 to join his brother-in-law, Gates W. Clancy, in an insurance defense practice in DuPage and Kane Counties. He subsequently formed his own Glen Ellyn firm, from which six members eventually became judges. One is his son, 18th Circuit Associate Judge Kenneth L. Popejoy. Charley Popejoy served as a hearing officer for the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission during the 1980s. He was a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Through his marriage to Gates Clancy's sister, he also was related to St. Charles attorneys Wendell W. Clancy, Michael W. Clancy of the ISBA Board of Governors, Timothy G. Clancy and Susan Clancy Boles, and San Francisco attorney Kent J. Clancy. Lewis Barron Chicago attorney Lewis R. Baron died April 30 at age 70 of injuries suffered in a fall. A 1955 graduate of the Harvard Law School, he had been of counsel to Schuyler, Roche & Zwirner since 2000. Mr. Baron concentrated in tax, trust and estate planning for family-owned businesses with four firms during his 46 years in practice. He was known for creating the "rabbi trust" in 1975, an executive compensation plan for retired clergy and employees of not-for-profit organizations. Federal tax incentives editor since 1994 for the American Bar Association Journal on Affordable Housing and Community Development, Mr. Baron served for many years on the Community Development and Housing Initiatives Committee of United Way of Chicago. Charles Blachinsky Kewanee attorney Charles W. "Chick" Blachinsky, a past president of the Henry County Bar Association, died April 11 at age 87. A 1939 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law, he had been of counsel since 1981 to the Blachinsky Law Offices with his son, John M. Blachinsky. Charles Blachinsky practiced continuously in Kewanee except for Army service as a sergeant during World War II in Europe. He was a past chair of the ISBA Municipal Law Section and municipal attorney for many cities, villages and other governmental units. Among them were Kewanee (three stints totaling 14 years), Atkinson (1956-79), Galva (1955-81), Kewanee School Dist. 229, Kewanee Airport Authority (1972-81) and Henry County Housing Authority (1948-81). He was an assistant Illinois attorney general for condemnations from 1960 to 1966. Mr. Blachinsky was a director of St. Francis Hospital and the Kewanee Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Kiwanis Club, and past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge. In addition to his law-partner son, survivors include a daughter, St. Louis attorney Kay Lindbeck of Collinsville, and a nephew, Chief Judge Jeffrey W. O'Connor of the 14th Circuit in Rock Island. Thomas McKay St. Charles attorney Thomas McKay Jr. died May 2 at age 81 of cancer in a New Jersey health care center. A 1944 graduate of the New York University Law School, he practiced with a New Jersey law firm for six years. In 1950, Mr. McKay became assistant general counsel of Thomas A. Edison Industries in West Orange, N.J., rising to general counsel and secretary and overseeing the company's merger with the McGraw Electric Co. in Elgin to form the McGraw-Edison Corp. Mr. McKay was vice president, general counsel and secretary of McGraw-Edison from 1967 to 1980, managing more than 35 merger and acquisition transactions. In 1980, he set up a legal department for the Swift Independent Packing Co., a spin-off from Beatrice Foods, and was vice president, secretary and general counsel when he retired in 1984. Mr. McKay was of counsel to the Chicago firm of Boodell, Sears, Giambalvo & Crowley from 1984 until 1987, when he began a second career as a volunteer in the Kane County office of Prairie State Legal Services. He received its Harry A. Blackmun Award in 1992. He served on the Norris Cultural Arts Center board in St. Charles and the Kane County Ambulance Board, and was an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. A memorial service for Mr. McKay will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, in the Episcopal chapel at The Evergreens, Morristown, N.J. Francis Nolan Additional information has been received about retired Chicago attorney Francis A. Nolan III, whose death on April 19 at age 56 from an infection related to cancer was reported in the May 1 issue. A 1971 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, Mr. Nolan became an assistant Cook County state's attorney in 1972 and helped prosecute serial killer John Wayne Gacy. He left to head the new Office of Professional Standards of the Chicago Police Department in the late 1970s. Mr. Nolan left the OPS in 1983 to begin a private practice in criminal defense, but had suffered from cancer for several years. Edward Scott South Holland attorney Edward A. Scott Jr., a resident of Olympia Fields, died March 29 at age 81 in a Blue Island hospital of pneumonia related to lung cancer. |
