Patricia Mell becomes dean at John Marshall in July

A Michigan law professor, Patricia Mell, will become the 11th dean of The John Marshall Law School on July 1. She will succeed Robert Gilbert Johnston, who held the position for eight years and has served on the faculty for more than 35 years.

"I look forward to working with all the law school's constituencies to build upon its successes," Mell said. "Its history of inclusion and diversity is something we can all be proud of, and its strengths at instructing students in both the theory and practice of law have served its graduates well."

A faculty member at the Michigan State University-Detroit College of Law, Mell is a 1978 graduate of the Case Western Reserve University Law School. Her areas of expertise include criminal law and e-commerce.

After stints as an assistant Ohio attorney general and corporation counsel for the Ohio secretary of state, Mell embarked on a teaching career in 1984 as a visiting assistant clinical professor at the Capital University Law School in Columbus.

After a subsequent year as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Toledo College of Law, she was on the faculty of the Widener University School of Law in Delaware from 1986 to 1991.

Mell joined the Michigan State law faculty in 1996 after five years in practice with Lewis, White & Clay in Detroit, and was associate dean for academic affairs from 1998 to 2001. This year, she is a visiting professor at the University of Memphis Cecil Humphreys School of Law.

An active member of the State Bar of Michigan, Mell has served on its Legal Education Committee and the Professional Development and Opportunities Committee of its Open Justice Commission.

She is the author of an article on national security under the USA Patriot Act that will be published in the spring issue of the Denver Law Review.

In her article, "Crossing the Bar: Law Schools and Their Disciples," which was published in the October 2000 issue of the Michigan Bar Journal, Mell outlined curriculum changes that have evolved as a balance between the strictly doctrinal approach to legal education and the need for skills training.

Quoting from an 1892 symposium statement that "Institutions must meet the demands of their time, right or wrong, or they will soon cease to be institutions, for the lack of disciples," Mell said "This statement is just as true in 2000..."
