ITLA to honor John Phillips posthumously

Former Chicago personal injury attorney John G. Phillips, who died in August 2001, will be the posthumous recipient of the 2003 Leonard M. Ring Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.

The presentation will take place Friday, June 6, during ITLA's annual convention banquet at Oak Brook Hills Resort, where Michael P. Schostok of Waukegan will be installed as president.

John Phillips was president of ITLA in 1964-65. His son and law partner, Stephen D. Phillips, is a member of the ITLA Board of Managers and a past member of the ISBA Board of Governors.

An active member of the Justinian Society who received its Award of Excellence in 1996, John Phillips contributed more than $220,000 to the society's scholarship fund in his years on the committee. Through his generosity, no applicant was turned down during that period.

Winnebago Bar gives medal to Elmer Rudy

Rockford attorney Elmer C. Rudy received the Winnebago County Bar Association's Edward Potter Lathrop Medal during a Law Day luncheon May 1.

The medal honors a member for distinguished professional achievements and public service that results in a significant and positive influence on the profession and on the quality of community life.

President of the Winnebago County Bar in 1980-81, Rudy practiced with Williams & McCarthy for 41 years before he retired in 1999. He was real estate taxation counsel to several Rockford-area corporations.

Appointed by the mayor to the library board after his retirement, Rudy has chaired the Wesley Willows board and what is now the Rosecrance Health Network, and he was president of Midway Village. He has received the Rotary Club Service Above Self Award.

Carla R. Michelotti, a past chair of the Fellows of the Illinois Bar Foundation, will be honored as Advertising Woman of the Year by the Women's Advertising Club of Chicago during a June 25 luncheon. She is executive vice president, general counsel and director of government affairs of Leo Burnett Worldwide.

Will County State's Attorney Jeffrey Tomczak will be honored as State's Attorney of the Year on Wednesday, June 18, during the annual dinner of the Illinois State Crime Commission at Drury Lane in Oak Brook.

Michael Stillman, a resident of Oak Lawn and partner in Querry & Harrow, Joliet, has been named president of the Community High School District 218 board. He was elected to the school board in 2001 and re-elected in April.

Two members of the ISBA Traffic Laws and Courts Section Council, Donald J. Ramsell of Wheaton and Edward M. Maloney of Skokie, will lead off the program.

Ramsell, who is president of the DuPage County Bar Association, will speak at 9 a.m. on DUI Forfeiture and Blood Issues, and Maloney will discuss Secretary of State Administrative Relief at 10 a.m. Thomas M. Moran of Skokie will follow at 11:15 a.m. with DUI: Drug vs. Alcohol.

After a 12:15 p.m. luncheon break, a Legislative Update will be given at 1:15 p.m. by Stephen W. Baker of Naperville, a member of the ISBA Assembly and Criminal Justice Section Council.

Pamela Strobel earns WBAI Bradwell Award

Pamela B. Strobel, executive vice president of the Exelon Corp., will receive the Myra Bradwell Award from the Women's Bar Association of Illinois during its 89th annual installation dinner.

Cook County Associate Judge Elizabeth M. Budzinski will be installed as WBAI president at the event at the Hilton Hotel and Towers, Chicago. A 5:30 p.m. reception will precede the 6:30 p.m. dinner in the Grand Ballroom.

A 1977 cum laude graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, Strobel became a partner in Sidley & Austin in 1988 after 11 years with Isham, Lincoln & Beale.

She joined Commonwealth Edison in 1993 as vice president and general counsel. When a merger created Exelon in October 2000, she became vice chair of ComEd and president of Exelon Energy Delivery, its distribution subsidiary.

A year later, Strobel was named vice chair and chief executive officer of EED and chair of ComEd and Philadelphia-based PECO Energy.

Keynote dinner speaker will be Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed. Her topic is "A Journalist's Odyssey: 36 Years in the Fast Lane."

Incoming WBAI officers in addition to Budzinski are Vice Presidents Marlene A. Kurilla and Lori G. Levin, Treasurer Dawn Gonzalez, and Secretaries Jennifer Sender, Jennifer Koehler and Jennifer Barron. Tracey J. Stokes is retiring president.

Budzinski serves on the ISBA Civil Practice and Procedure Section Council. Kurilla, who serves on the ISBA Assembly, is past chair of the Committee on Continuing Legal Education and a member of the Insurance Law Section Council and Committee on Supreme Court Rules. Levin chairs the Committee on Mental Health Law and serves on the Elder Law Section Council.
