Appellate Lawyers

Appellate Justice James A. Knecht of the 4th District will be installed Friday, June 6, as president of the Appellate Lawyers Association. The annual luncheon will take place in the Chicago Athletic Association. Call (312) 554-2090.

Black Women Lawyers

Chief Justice Mary Ann G. McMorrow of the Illinois Supreme Court and 18th Circuit Judge Ann B. Jorgensen, president of the Illinois Judges Association, will receive Glass Ceiling Buster Awards from the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers on Wednesday, June 11.

Franklin County Bar

The Franklin County Bar Association presented a Liberty Bell Award to Sandy Davis of West Frankfort during its Law Day luncheon May 1 at Rend Lake. Supreme Court Justice Philip J. Rarick was keynote speaker.

Davis was nominated by city attorney Terry M. Green for her efforts as a park board member to improve the West Frankfort Community Park.

Jackson County Bar

Philip Baim contributed $1 million for scholars

Chicago attorney Philip Baim, who donated $1 million to The John Marshall Law School to endow a scholarship fund, died May 11 at age 97 in his North Side home.

Born on a ranch in the Sand Hills of northwestern Nebraska, Mr. Baim moved with his mother to Chicago for better educational opportunities. He graduated in 1929 from John Marshall and began a general practice during the Depression.

Mr. Baim enlisted in the Army in 1943 at age 38. He served in Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army and its Corps of Engineers, landing at Utah Beach and receiving three Battle Stars for action in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

In 1934, Mr. Baim became a founding member of the Decalogue Society of Lawyers and served on its board and foundation board for many years. In 1935, he was a member of a congressional Select Committee on Investigation of Real Estate Bondholder Reorganizations that resulted in establishment of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Mr. Baim was president of the John Marshall Alumni Association in 1965-66 after nine years on its board, and he received a Citation of Merit from the law school in 1967. He was president of the Edward T. Lee Foundation from 1969 to 1973.

Mr. Baim also served on John Marshall's board of trustees for 20 years. In 1993 he endowed the million-dollar Edith and Philip Baim Scholarship Fund to assist law students with high academic credentials and financial need.

John Ferguson

Retired federal magistrate judge John M. Ferguson of Belleville died March 23 at age 81 in Memorial Hospital. He was a 1948 graduate of the Washington University School of Law after military service during World War II.

Commissioned a second lieutenant in 1943, he landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day 1944 and fought in France, at the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, and in Germany. He earned six Battle Stars and rose to the rank of captain.

Mr. Ferguson was stationed near the Elbe River in 1945 when V-E Day concluded the fighting in Europe, and his unit was on its way to the Pacific for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. He received several other military decorations, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the French government was presented to him in 2002.

Mr. Ferguson started his law practice in East St. Louis and Belleville as an associate and later a partner in Baker, Kagy & Wagner, which became Wagner, Connor, Ferguson, Bertrand & Baker. He was appointed a magistrate judge of U.S. District Court for the Southern District in 1989, and he retired in 1994.

A past president of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association, Mr. Ferguson chaired the ISBA Professional Ethics Committee from 1971 to 1974 and served on a hearing board of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission. He was a past president of the St. Clair Country Club and president of Arch Aircraft Inc. from 1966 to 1968.

Thomas Foley

McHenry attorney Thomas M. Foley was found dead in his Country Club Estates home on April 28 after he failed to arrive at his office. He was 53.

A 1981 graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law, Mr. Foley helped raise funds for the McHenry County Bar Association's legal aid foundation by organizing a gridiron show for the past three years.

William Herring

Retired Peoria attorney William H. Herring died April 18 at age 72 in the Methodist Medical Center. He graduated in 1954 from the University of Illinois College of Law after service with the Army Counterintelligence Corps in Washington, D.C., during the Korean War.

A former assistant state's attorney and founding partner in Herring & Hoehne, Mr. Herring also practiced with Safford, West & Herring and the Law Offices of Robert Burhans. He retired in 2001.

Mr. Herring was a charter member of the Peoria AMBUCS and past district governor. He was an elder in Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Robert Hupp

Aurora attorney Robert B. Hupp, a partner in Murphy, Hupp & Kinnally, died May 11 at age 79 of pneumonia. A 1950 graduate of the Harvard Law School, he was a veteran of military service during World War II. Mr. Hupp was an assistant Illinois attorney general in 1953-54.
