Inns of Court

Jewish Judges

The Jewish Judges Association of Illinois held its first annual dinner Sept. 14 in Skokie and presented its inaugural Justice Award to retired Supreme Court justice Seymour Simon. Cook County Judge Gerald C. Bender succeeded Aaron Jaffe as president.

Other officers are Vice Presidents Edward R. Burr, Morton Denlow, Allen Goldberg and Shelley Sutker-Dermer; Secretaries Ronald S. Davis and Lori M. Wolfson, and Treasurer Robert E. Gordon.

Justinian Society

The Justinian Society of Lawyers will award law student scholarships during a dinner Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Topo Gigio Restaurent in Chicago. Call President Thomas M. Battista, (312) 970-3441.

Mortgage Attorneys

North Suburban Bar

Cook County Judge Daniel M. Locallo installed Jeanine M. Cunningham as president of the North Suburban Bar Association during its annual dinner Sept. 10 in Glenview. Other officers are Vice Presidents Paul Shuldiner, Deidre Baumann, Nancy Vizer and Margaret Frossard; Secretary Diane Damico, and Treasurer Paul Padron.

Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans received the association's L. Sanford Blustin Award, and Judge Dorothy Kirie Kinnaird was the featured speaker.

Clay County Judge Patrick Duke succumbs to cancer at 52

Resident Clay County Judge Patrick L. Duke of the 4th Circuit died Aug. 10 at age 52 of cancer. A resident of Flora, he had been on medical leave since the end of July.

A 1975 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, Mr. Duke practiced with Smith, McCollum, Riggle & Moses until 1991, when he embarked on a private practice. He was elected to the Clay County seat in 1996 and also sat in Effingham and Marion Counties.

A former Harter Township trustee and attorney for the Flora Airport Authority, Mr. Duke served on the Flora Volunteer Fire Department for 21 years. He was past chair of the Flora Industrial Commission and honorary chair of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Caliste Alster

Retired Chicago patent attorney Caliste J. Alster died Aug. 23 at age 75. After two stints as an Army combat engineer commander, he graduated in 1954 from the George Washington University Law School and was a U.S. patent examiner until 1956.

Admitted to the Illinois bar in 1959, Mr. Alster was a partner for many years in the Chicago patent law firm now known as Trexler, Bushnell, Giangiorgi & Blackstone.

He served on the adjunct faculties of the Chicago-Kent College of Law and The John Marshall Law School, and chaired the Chicago Bar Association Trademark Subcommittee.

Alan Auerbach

Chicago attorney Alan H. Auerbach, who was president of Baum, Sigman, Auerbach & Neuman and managing partner until last June, died Aug. 25 at age 48 of a brain tumor that was diagnosed in 1999.

A 1980 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, Mr. Auerbach joined the labor and employee benefits firm that year and concentrated in fringe benefit funds and union representation. A Northbrook resident, he was a trustee of the public library.

Sergius Boikan

California attorney Sergius M. Boikan, a native of Chicago, died July 20. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he received undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Chicago before graduating from Harvard Law School.

Albert Bradley

Retired Downers Grove attorney and real estate developer Albert S. Bradley Jr. died recently at age 79. A resident of Westchester, he was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1949.

George Briody

Retired Chicago banker George Michael Briody Jr., a Crystal Lake resident, died Aug. 13 at age 76 of lung cancer in Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. He was a 1956 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law.

Mr. Briody joined Fairfield Savings Bank, which was owned by his family, and was president from 1978 until 2001. He continued as board chair until the financial institution was purchased early this year by Midwest Trust and Savings Bank.

A past president of the Illinois Savings and Loan League, Mr. Briody was a director of the U.S. League of Savings Institutions and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago. He was a past chair of the American Bar Association Savings and Loan Committee.

Charles Calisoff

Chicago attorney Charles I. Calisoff died recently at age 69. A 1958 graduate of the Yale University Law School, he served for several years on the ISBA Family Law Section Council and the Task Force on Domestic Violence.

Mr. Calisoff also was a member of the Committee on Legal Education in 1968 and the Special Statewide Committee to Study and Formulate a Comprehensive Code of Marriage and Divorce in 1970.

An assistant to the Illinois Bar Examiners from 1966 to 1994, Mr. Calisoff was a multi-state bar exam instructor for two years. He was a hearing officer for the Illinois Pollution Control Board from 1971 to 1975.

National legal counsel for the American Academy of Matrimonial Attorneys from 1973 to 1977, he was a national vice president until 1988, and a vice president of the Illinois chapter from 1985 to 1988. He also was secretary and legal counsel of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers from 1977 to 1980.

Anthony Corsentino

Pekin attorney Anthony P. Corsentino, a member of the ISBA Family Law Section Council, drowned in a private lake in Groveland on Aug. 20 at age 62.

A resident of Morton, Mr. Cosentino retired in 1999 from a private practice with offices in Peoria, Bloomington and Morton. He was a part-time Tazewell County guardian ad litem for two years and took on the job full-time last year.

A former semi-pro football player and a Chicago police officer for four years in the 1960s, Mr. Cosentino graduated in 1967 from the DePaul University College of Law and served two years with the Army military police during the Vietnam War. He was an assistant state's attorney in Cook and Tazewell Counties in the 1970s.

Nancy Crossman

Nancy Royse Crossman, former special counsel to the American Stock Exchange and general counsel of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, died July 3 at age 64 in San Diego.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Mrs. Crossman graduated in 1977 from the Fordham University Law School and was an associate with Beekman & Bogue and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.

Leonard Fisher

Chicago attorney Leonard Fisher, a partner in Fisher, Hassen & Fisher, died recently at age 79. A 1949 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, he was an Army lieutenant during World War II.

Arthur Koch

Retired Evanston attorney Arthur R. Koch, a resident of Schaumburg, died Aug. 22 at age 84 in St. Alexius Medical Center. A 1949 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, he served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Koch was of counsel to Tenney & Bentley before retiring in 1983.

Frederick Krubel

Retired patent attorney Frederick J. Krubel of Riverside died in August at age 82. A member of the Illinois bar since 1950, he had practiced with International Harvester until 1983.

Mr. Krubel received a service award from the Bohemian Lawyers Association of Chicago in 1999, and he was honored in 1950 as an ISBA Senior Counsellor.

Jack Larsen

Patent lawyer Jack Larsen of DesPlaines, who in 1975 organized the Center for the Law of New Technology at the Lewis University College of Law in Glen Ellyn, died Aug. 2 in his home.

After receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics and mathematics and serving in the Army during World War II, Mr. Larsen graduated from the George Washington University Law School.

A pioneer in guided missile electronics, he helped the Navy develop systems for the Nautilus submarine and Polaris missile, earning a Meritorious Civilian Service Award and a Presidential Certificate of Merit.

After practicing paten law with the Bell Telephone Laboratories Physical Research Laboratory and teaching intellectual property law at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mr. Larsen became a special consultant to the National Aeronautics and Space Council.

After retiring from the law faculty of Lewis University (now Northern Illinois University College of law), he was a patent attorney with Otto & Blumenthal in Park Ridge.

Harold Nealis

Retired Joliet attorney Harold D. Nealis Jr., a resident of Mahomet, died Aug. 5 at age 72. He was a 1961 graduate of The John Marshall Law School.

Nancy Riley

Nancy Rebecca Mills Riley of Urbana, a former estate tax attorney for the Internal Revenue Service, died July 27 at age 74 in the Champaign County Nursing Home.

A 1973 graduate of the University of New Mexico Law School, Mrs. Riley had taught for 20 years in elementary schools in several states. She also taught law at Parkland College until she retired in 1984, and chaired the Urbana Human Relations Commission.

James Roberts

James G. Roberts of Lake Forest, a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, died July 15 at age 80. He was a vice president of claims with CNA Insurance Co. for 35 years and a member of the National Bond Claim Institute.

Keith Rudolf

Former Chicago investment industry attorney Keith J. Rudolf died Aug. 7 at age 52 in Arlington, Va., where he had lived since becoming a partner in Jorden Burt LLP, Washington, D.C., in 2001.

A 1979 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law who had a master's degree in business administration, Mr. Rudolf had interned with Stein, Roe & Farnham before joining the mutual fund management firm.

He served successively as a first vice president, senior vice president and general counsel until 1995, when he left to purchase a 60-foot schooner and sail the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean islands for four years.

Mr. Rudolf was a past president and board chair of the Investment Counsel Association of America, chair of the Investment Company Institute and a governor of ICI Mutual Insurance Co.

Jack Shaffer

New York City investment banker Jack Arnold Shaffer, a 1953 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, died Aug. 18 at age 73 of kidney cancer in Norwalk, Conn.
