Circuitshorts

Circuits elect chief judges

Judge Donald C. Hudson was elected Sept. 16 to a two-year term as chief judge of the 16th Circuit that will begin in December. He will succeed Chief Judge Philip L. DiMarzio.

A 1975 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, Judge Hudson was first assistant Kane County state's attorney when he was named an associate judge in 1993. A felony trial judge for eight years, he became a circuit judge in 2000. He has served as acting chief judge in DiMarzio's absences.

Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans of the Cook County Circuit Court was re-elected unanimously on Sept. 14 by 240 colleagues to a second three-year term, beginning in December.

Judge on the mend

Clay County Judge Alan Buck of the 4th Circuit is recovering from injuries suffered Sept. 25 when he was blown out of his Flora home in an explosion. He was transferred to the Springfield Memorial Hospital burn unit in serious but stable condition, and has improved steadily.

A 1981 honors graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law, Buck was Clay County state's attorney when he was appointed resident judge in October 2003 after the death of Patrick L. Duke. His term will expire in December.

Retiree faces roast

Retiring Judge Gerald B. Cohn of U.S. District Court for the Southern District will be toasted and roasted Friday, Dec. 3, during a black-tie-optional dinner in the Collinsville Holiday Inn. There will be a special presentation by The Courthouse Steps.

St. Louis newspaper columnist Pat Gauen will be master of ceremonies. Roasters include federal defender Richard H. Parsons, Judge Philip J. Kardis, and attorneys Donald E. Groshong, John P. Kujawski and G. Edward Moorman.

Retirements announced

Presiding McHenry County Judge Ward S. Arnold will leave the 19th Circuit bench on Dec. 31. Applications for the vacancy will be accepted until Oct. 22 by Supreme Court Justice Robert R. Thomas. Call Vicki Kraycar at (630) 871-0025 for details.

Arnold became an associate judge in 1984 and was elected to the circuit court in 1996. He has been presiding judge since January 2003.

Associate Judge Lola P. Maddox of the 3rd Circuit in Edwardsville will retire Nov. 30 after 25 years on the bench. She was appointed in 1979, four years after graduating from the Duke University Law School, and was the first woman jurist in Madison County.

Boone County State's Attorney Roger T. Russell retired July 30 after a record 17 years in office. Russell was appointed in 1987 to the vacancy of Gerald F. Grubb and was elected in 1988. He has been succeeded by James P. Hursh.

David Koski retired in August as first deputy Winnebago County state's attorney after almost 33 years as a prosecutor. Two years of Army service after graduation from the University of Illinois College of Law preceded his being hired Jan. 3, 1972, as an assistant state's attorney.

Prosecutor leaves state

Tim J. Willis of Charleston, a drug case prosecutor for the East Central Illinois Task Force of the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor's Office for the past four years, has been named an assistant U.S. attorney in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He is a former Moultrie County state's attorney.
