A 1962 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, Mr. Meyer was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1966. He lost a re-election campaign in 1972 but returned in 1974. He served until 1982, when he made an unsuccessful run for the Senate. As chair of the House Energy and Environment Committee, Mr. Meyer was a founder of the Midwest Legislative Council on the Environment. He was a member of the Illinois Pollution Control Board from 1982 to 1998 and chair of the Illinois Environmental Regulatory Review Commission from 1999 to 2002. James Mohr Retired Chicago attorney James Francis Mohr died Oct. 15 at age 72. A former sales representative for Inland Steel, he worked for the North American News Alliance while attending night classes at The John Marshall Law School. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1975. John O'Connor Retired Michigan attorney John Robert O'Connor, a 1949 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law, died Oct. 8 at age 78 in Lansing, Mich. He joined Michigan Civil Service in 1951 and retired in 1990 as employee relations director. Mr. O'Connor served for 30 years on the Michigan State Employees Credit Union board and was president for three terms. He also was a chapter president of the Michigan State Employees Retirees Association. Eugene Pilawski Retired Chicago attorney Eugene W. Pilawski, formerly of Northbrook, died Oct. 13 at age 81 in his Granger, Ind., home. He was a 1949 graduate of the University of Notre Dame Law School. A former vice president of Fairfield Savings and Loan Association, Mr. Pilawski was a past president of the Advocates Society and the National Advocates Society. Robert Rowe Retired attorney Robert S. Rowe died in September at age 90. Admitted to the Illinois bar in 1945, he was a labor relations attorney with Darling and Co. for several years. Marshall Rowley Retired Chicago attorney Marshall Gregory Rowley died in October at age 90. A 1953 graduate of the Loyola University Law School, he was with First National Bank of Chicago until 1975 and continued in private practice until 1994. Mr. Rowley served in the Army during World War II and retired from the Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, at Wittenburg Commons in Luther Village, Arlington Heights. N. Arthur Rubinoff Chicago attorney N. Arthur Rubinoff died in October at age 86. A 1940 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, he was past president of the North Avenue Businessmen's Association and B'nai Israel Congregation, and a trustee of North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, Highland Park. Survivors include a son, Harry W. Rubinoff, whose law practice is at the same location. Paul Schreiber Paul Schreiber Jr., of counsel to Schreiber, Mack & Postweiler, Orland Park, died Sept. 26 at age 69 of pancreatic cancer in Charleston, S.C. He moved recently to Seneca, S.C. A 1961 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, he joined Schreiber, Mack & Pieper, the Palos Heights firm of his father, Paul R. Schreiber. He was counsel to the Schreiber Foundation for Cancer Research. Rita Scheurich Rita M. Scheurich, a 1943 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law, died Oct. 13. Married to attorney Gregory J. Scheurich, who died in 1991, she practiced during World War II with the Office of Alien Property Custodian before leaving to raise their children. Survivors include a son, G. Michael Scheurich of Guyer & Enichen, Rockford; a daughter, attorney Anne M. Scheurich of Orland Park, and a grandson, Dallas, Texas, attorney Owen M. Scheurich. Abraham Shanes Abraham Shanes, who practiced law in Chicago for almost 75 years, died Oct. 17 at age 95 of cancer in his Skokie Home. He had been a partner in Shanes & Shanes with his son, Samuel Shanes, since 1967. A 1930 graduate of The John Marshall Law School at age 20, Mr. Shanes could not be admitted to the Illinois bar until age 21. He had to petition the Supreme Court for permission to take the bar exam. A past president of Temple Menorah in Chicago, he was responsible for funding and constructing its current building. He also was an Israel Bonds trustee. Herbert Sirott Former Chicago attorney Herbert N. Sirott died Sep. 29 at age 65 of degenerative brain disease in Dublin, Ireland, where he had lived since 2001. A 1970 graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law who was active in politics, Mr. Sirott was treasurer of election campaigns for Adlai Stevenson III, Alan Dixon and Roman Pucinski. Among his clients were the Boglio brothers who founded the Giordano's Pizza chain, and he was a part owner of a Giordano's franchise. Carol Ann Smith Carol Ann Smith of Lafayette, La., a 1973 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law and former assistant dean, died Oct. 17 at age 62 in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. A resident of Louisiana for 26 years, she was an attorney with Roy, Bivins, Judice, Roberts & Wartelle. John Smith John A. Smith of Petersburg died Oct. 13 at age 75 in Sunny Acres. A 1968 graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of law, he practiced in Chicago with Kozlowski & Smith and later had a law office in Springfield. Mr. Smith was Hickory Hills city attorney and prosecutor, and city manager of Northbrook and Oak Lawn. He taught legal writing at Chicago-Kent. Michael Stein Retired Chicago attorney Michael G. Stein, a resident of the Whitehall North Convalescent Home in Deerfield, died Oct. 15 at age 91 of pneumonia in Highland Park Hospital. A 1935 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, he met his first wife, Esther Silverstein, there and they practiced for several years as Silverstein & Stein. She died in 1959. Mr. Stein also was an assistant corporation counsel for the City of Chicago in the 1960s. Herman Van Mell Retired Chicago corporate attorney Herman T. Van Mell died Sept. 5 at age 93 of prostate cancer in Stuart, Fla., in the eye of Hurricane Frances. A 1939 graduate of Harvard Law School, he had a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin. General counsel of the Sunbeam Corp. for four decades and senior vice president, Mr. Van Mell was instrumental in more than 60 acquisitions. Judge advocate of the Chicago Yacht Club for 33 years and commodore for two years, he sailed in 36 Mackinac Races. He won 15 season championships with his sloop, Ardelle, and another winning craft, Volare, was named Section Two Boat of the Year. A celebration of his life was held Oct. 10 at the yacht club. Robert White Ottawa attorney Robert Elsworth White died Sept. 11 at age 71 in Community Hospital. A 1961 graduate of the University of Notre Dame Law School after service in the Air Force, he was a founder in 1966 of White, Marsh, Anderson, Vickers & Deobler. President of the LaSalle County Bar Association in 1978-79, Mr. White was chair of the Ottawa National Bank and a board member from 1977 to 1991. He also was a board member of First National Bank of Grand Ridge, and served in 1975-76 on the hospital board. Joseph Zoline Retired corporate attorney Joseph Zoline, a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, died Sept. 23 at age 92 in his Beverly Hills, Calif., home. After practicing for several years in Chicago, including a stint as chief executive of the Arlington Park Racetrack, Mr. Zoline became president of MSL Industries in Los Angeles. In 1968, he began a venture in Telluride, Colo., that resulted in its development as a ski resort area. He built ski lifts and a lodge in 1972 and opened Coonskin Lift in 1975. |
