Olga Jurco was first woman magistrate in federal court Olga Jurco, the first woman to be appointed as a federal magistrate judge in the Northern District of Illinois, died Jan. 2 at age 86 in Austin, Texas. A 1938 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law who was unable to find work as a lawyer, Ms. Jurco became a legal secretary to Judge Walter J. LaBuy in U.S. District Court and later was his law clerk. She was senior law clerk to Judge Richard B. Austin when Congress created the office of U.S. magistrate, and she was one of three lawyers who were appointed March 12, 1971. Her article on the experience, "The U.S. Magistrate: A Transition Period," was published two years later in the Chicago Bar Record. Ms. Jurco served two consecutive two-year terms as a magistrate judge before retiring in 1985. She served on the district court commission that implemented the Federal Speedy Trial Act and chaired its systems and procedure group. |
