Solving divorce in bankruptcy

The Commercial, Banking and Bankruptcy Law Section will present a seminar on related problems in bankruptcies and marriage dissolutions from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 23, at the Radisson Hotel, Bloomington.

Real estate closing basics include avoiding trouble

A half-day ISBA Law Ed Series seminar on closing real estate transactions will be presented Friday, May 7, in the Chicago Regional Office by the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section and the Young Lawyers Division.

Titled "Clearing Your Way to Closing: An Introduction for General Practitioners on Troubleshooting Issues in Residential and Commercial Real Estate Transactions," the program will provide working knowledge of critical elements and pitfalls in buying and selling real estate.

Program coordinator Michele M. Jochner, chair of the General Practice Section Council and member of the ISBA Board of Governors, will open the seminar at 8:45 a.m. Cook County Judge Edna Turkington-Viktora, the section newsletter co-editor, will be moderator.

At 8:50 a.m., a review of Purchase Agreements and Related Documents for Residential Real Estate Transactions will be given by John G. O'Brien of Arlington Heights, a member of the Board of Governors and founder of the Illinois Real Estate Lawyers Association.

At 9:30 a.m., R. Kymn Harp of Arnstein & Lehr, Chicago, will discuss Purchase Agreements and Related Documents for Commercial Real Estate Transactions.

Corporate law dinner April 26

The ISBA Corporate Law Departments Section will present a panel discussion, "So You Want to Be an In-house Corporate Lawyer: Strategies for Going or Remaining In-house," after a dinner Monday, April 26, in the ISBA Chicago Regional Office.

The dinner, included in the $20 fee, will begin at 5:30 p.m. The program will follow at 6:15 p.m. For reservations, call Phyllis Lester at (312) 726-8775.

Panelists include James R. Jenkins, senior vice president and general counsel of Deere & Co., Moline, and Francesca M. Maher of Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw, former senior vice president, secretary and general counsel of UAL Corp.

Others are Douglas G. Bain, senior vice president and general counsel of The Boeing Co., and Chris Percival of Chicago Legal Search.

The panel will review the types of work done by in-house counsel, what the corporate law department looks for, who the companies look for, negotiating compensation packages, and expectations on growth and hiring in 2004.

"Keeping Current: Health Care Transactions and Litigation," an ISBA seminar, will be conducted Friday, April 23, in the Chicago Regional Office by the Health Care Section. Timothy Christian wins trials

Timothy Christian High School of Elmhurst placed first in the ISBA High School Mock Trial Invitational, held March 5 and 6 at the University of Illinois in Springfield.

Boylan Catholic High School of Rockford came in second, and Oak Park-River Forest High School and St. Charles East High School tied for third.

Boylan Catholic also received the award for highest team average on the written law examination portion of competition, averaging 42.8 out of a possible 48 score. Boylan student James Woywod scored 47 on the exam.

St. Charles East received honorable mention for scoring 42.6 on the law exam, and student Jim Houswerth scored 47.

Other teams rounding out the top eight were Hinsdale Central High, Maine South High of Park Ridge, Mundelein High and Noble Street Charter High of Chicago.

The mock trial program is conducted annually by the Committee on Law-related Education for the Public, chaired this year by Lynda S. Marquardt of Naperville.

Hanging up a new shingle requires using right tools

An ISBA seminar for new or would-be small firm lawyers and solo practitioners will be conducted from 8:50 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 14, at the Holiday Inn, Collinsville.

Sponsors of "Hanging Out Your Shingle (Without Hanging Yourself)" are the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section and the Young Lawyers Division.

More than a basic course on practice skills, this seminar will examine the fine points of systems, finances, conflicts, retaining clients, and understanding the duties of a lawyer to the profession, courts and community.

Program coordinators are Bernard Wysocki of Waukegan, a member of the General Practice Section Council, and section council chair Michele M. Jochner, law clerk to Chief Justice Mary Ann G. McMorrow and member of the ISBA Board of Governors.

LaSalle County Bar conducting public courses

The LaSalle County Bar Association is midway through its spring People's Law School series, co-sponsored by the Illinois State Bar Association.

The free public programs are being conducted from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays in the Fireplace Lounge at Illinois Valley Community College.

On April 22, James Reilly of M. G. Gulo & Associates will discuss Social Security issues. On April 29, assistant state's attorney Vicki Denny and assistant public defender Ed Kuleck will speak on "What Everyone Should Know About Juvenile Law, both Delinquency Issues and Abuse and Neglect Cases."

The series will conclude May 6 with the presentation, "What Everyone Should Know About the Felony Crime Rate and the Prosecution and Defense of Such Cases, Including Drug Cases," by assistant state's attorneys Matt Kidder and Brian Vescogni, Public Defender Dan Bute and assistant public defender Tim Capellini.

Proposals for ISBA Law Ed Series seminars to be presented during the fall semester will be accepted through Wednesday, June 9. This does not include proposals for Midyear Meeting seminars.

Section councils and committees that submit plans are requested to consider speakers who reflect the geographic, ethnic and gender diversity of the bar. Appropriate segments on alternative dispute resolution and professional ethics also are encouraged.

Unmarried pairs' rights explored by May 21 panel

The two-year-old ISBA Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity will present its inaugural Law Ed Series seminar from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 21, at the Holiday Inn, Collinsville.

Titled "Protecting the Rights of Unmarried Couples: Issues and Solutions," the seminar is co-sponsored by the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section.

Roza B. Gossage of the Law Office of Roza Gossage, Belleville, a member of the committee, is program coordinator and moderator. She will open the seminar with introductions.

At 9:15 a.m., committee member Richard A. Wilson of Nottage & Ward, Chicago, will speak for an hour on relationships, covering Making, Securing and Breaking the Whole Relationship: Oral and Written Agreements,

Wilson's remarks will cover issues of the scope and validity of relationships, remedies for ending or enforcing them, lawsuits for constructive trust, the effect of a relationship on other relationships, and tax consequences.

At 10:30 a.m., Granite City attorney Linda L. Holder will speak on Part but Not All: Ownership of Property. Her discussion includes obtaining and holding title, remedies, suits for partition or constructive trust, and tax consequences.

At 11:30 a.m., Bruce E. Hopson of the Law Office of Bruce E. Hopson, St. Louis, will review Other Legal Rights and Remedies Available in securing part of a relationship by specific means or for specific purposes.
