Women's Bar of Illinois

Appellate Justice Shelvin Louise Marie Hall and Cook County Judge Dorothy Kirie Kinnaird will receive Mary Heftel Hooton Awards during the 90th annual judicial reception of the Women's Bar Association of Illinois.

The event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, in the Mid-Day Club of Chicago at Bank One Plaza. The late Judge Hooton, a WBAI past president, endowed a permanent office for the association.

Durbin earns JMLS accolade

Career choices explored May 1

Northern Illinois University will conduct a seminar, "Career Opportunities for Attorneys," from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 1, with co-sponsorship by the DeKalb County, DuPage County, Kane County and Winnebago County Bar Association.

The program in the Regency Room of Holmes Student Center, DeKalb, will feature California attorney and career consultant Hindi Greenberg, often referred to as "the Ann Landers for lawyers."

A former litigator and founder of Lawyers in Transition in the San Francisco area, Greenberg is the author of "The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook: More than 300 Things You Can Do with a Law Degree," which will be included in each participant's materials.

Employment Lawyers

Three more monthly brown-bag luncheon seminars will be conducted by the Illinois chapter of the National Employment Lawyers Association at 12 noon Tuesdays in the eighth-floor conference room of the Monadnock Building, Chicago.

On April 20, Ronald Schwartz and Peter Carey will give an update on tax consequences of settlements and judgments under the civil rights laws. On May 18, Roy Brandys will discuss bankruptcy and employment law.

Home repair issues aired

The warm breezes of spring evoke dreams of flowers and nightmares of hustlers working the neighborhoods to cheat unsuspecting homeowners with repair scams.

The ISBA will broadcast a timely, two-part cable television program next month on the important issues of "Home Improvement and Remodeling: What You Should Know."

Segments will aired at 10 p.m. Tuesdays on Chicago Access Network channel 21. Part one may be seen on May 4 and May 18, and part two on May 11 and May 25.

Panelists are Samuel H. Levine of Arnstein & Lehr, Chicago, chair of the ISBA Real Estate Law Section Council; section council member Jack H. Tibbetts, assistant Oak Park village attorney, and Chicago construction litigation attorney Michael C. Davis.

The panel moderator is Gilda Hudson-Winfield of Chicago, a member of the Committee on Cable Television Programming and the Committee on Law-related Education for the Public.

Epilogue

Alfred Kirkland: Bar president, judge, writer, athlete

Alfred Younges Kirkland Sr. was a state and federal judge. He was a past president of the Illinois State Bar Association and two regional bar groups. And he was an assistant state's attorney and assistant Illinois attorney general.

Mr. Kirkland, a lifelong Elgin civic leader who died March 19 at age 86 in Sherman Hospital, also was a writer. The son of a Chicago newspaper editor, he penned poetry, wrote law review articles and composed columns on outdoor activities for several periodicals.
