Chicago Bar

During the 131st annual meeting of the Chicago Bar Association, Joy V. Cunningham will accept the presidential Lincoln Gavel from Michael K. Demetrio. Jewish Judges

Justinian Society

Chicago attorney John C. Sciaccotta, a member of the ISBA Civil Practice and Procedure Section Council, has been elected president of the Justinian Society. A formal installation dinner will take place in September.

Other new officers are Lisa A. Marino, Celia G. Gamrath and Franco A. Coladipietro, vice presidents; Mauro Glorioso, treasurer, and Donald J. Storino Jr., secretary. Marino, Gamrath, Coladipietro and Glorioso serve on the ISBA Assembly.

Retiring President Thomas M. Battista, also an Assembly member, presented the Judge Gerald Sbarbaro Mentoring Award to Judge Anthony Iosco at the May 20 election meeting. Assembly member Stephen D. Phillips was honored for his support of scholarships and other philanthropic initiatives of the society.

Lake County Women

Arlington Heights attorney Stuart H. Wolf has been reappointed as attorney for the Illinois Real Estate Lawyers Association. He is a past president of the Northwest Suburban Bar Association.

Wolf is secretary of the Business Advice and Financial Planning Section Council and newsletter co-editor of the Corporation, Securities and Business Law Section Council. He serves on the Task Force on Unauthorized Practice of Law and the Committee on Bar Services and Activities.

South Suburban Bar

Wojcik compiles book on research

Associate Prof. Mark E. Wojcik of The John Marshall Law School has added to the scholarship available to the practicing attorney and law student with the book, "Illinois Legal Research," published by Carolina Academic Press.

The vice chair of the ISBA International and Immigration Law Section Council and member of the Individual Rights and Responsibilities Section Council, Wojcik devoted five years to his search of legal annals throughout the state for research secrets.

The book's 12 chapters cover effective research techniques related to understanding the Illinois Constitution, judicial decisions, court rules, statutes and their legislative histories, local ordinances, and administrative regulations. A citation guide, a comprehensive appendix and a legal research quiz are included.

Realtor-attorney Good describes mega-dealing

Chicago attorney Steven L. Good, president of the Chicago Association of Realtors, has written an entertaining book titled "Churches, Jails and Gold Mines: Mega-Deals from a Real Estate Maverick."

Good's work relates inside stories behind some of the world's most intriguing high-stakes real estate transactions, including his own auction of Trump Plaza of the Palm Beaches. It closes with a afterword by Donald J. Trump.

Keevers pens first book

Former Chicago trial lawyer and homicide detective Thomas J. Keevers has written his first novel, "Music Across the Wall," which has been published by Five Star.

Private investigator Mike Duncavan, the book's hero, is a twice-divorced, ex-cop, disbarred attorney who has 15 days to investigate a murder for counsel to the defendant. He risks his life and what's left of his reputation following a trail of cryptic clues.

Minor league, major event

You can't beat fun at the old ballgame, especially when it's a benefit for legal assistance. The DuPage Legal Aid Foundation has scheduled an outing Friday, July 9, to a minor league contest between the Kane County Cougars and the Quad-City River Bandits.

CDEL summer bash

The Center for Disability and Elder Law plans a benefit, "Blue Eyes, Big City," on Thursday, July 15, with reception, dinner and a performance of "His Way: A Tribute to the Man and His Music."

CVLS Race Judicata

The Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation will hold its 11th annual 5K "Race Judicata: Sprint for Justice" on Thursday, Aug. 12, over a new lakefront course that begins and ends in Grant Park South.

More than 2,500 lawyers, judges, paralegals and legal staff members participate, running or walking, with food, refreshments and award presentations after the race. Individuals and teams may sign up by calling Cara Frattasi at (312) 332-3319.

Recent honorees

Federal Defender Terence F. MacCarthy, a Laureate of the ISBA Academy of Illinois Lawyers, received the Federal Bar Association Public Interest Award during a recent reception in the Dirksen Courthouse. ABA President-elect Robert Grey was keynote speaker.

Also getting pro bono honors were Ronald J. Kramer and Margaret Ann Sewell of Seyfarth Shaw; Kelly A. Powis of Gardner, Carton & Douglas; Laura D. Cullison, Kimberly M. Reed, Marlon D. The Peoria County Bar Association and Prairie State Legal Services honored Jeremy H. Heiple as Pro Bono Attorney of the Year during a Law Day luncheon April 29. Reynolds, Murphy & Associates was named Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year.

Judge William J. Hibbler of U.S. District Court for the Northern District has been honored for establishing a Children's Law Pro Bono Project while he was presiding judge of the Cook County Juvenile Justice Division.

The award was presented April 22 by the Northwestern University School of Law Children and Family Justice Center. The firms of Baker & McKenzie, Lord, Bissell & Brook, and McDermott, Will & Emery also were honored.

Robert A. Helman of Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw received a Lifetime Achievement Award on June 2 from the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago. A board member since LAF was founded in 1972 and a past president, he helped develop its mission.

The Chicago office of Piper Rudnick honored several attorneys and staff members during a pro bono awards dinner May 18. They are Raj Shah, Steven Hunter, Antonio Cerda, Catherine Burkhardt and Matthew Carmody.

State Farm Insurance and Prairie State Legal Services recently received a Pro Bono Partner Award from CorporateProBono. Org, a national outreach project of the Association of Corporate Counsel.

State Farm and Prairie State were cited for their partnership in providing quality legal assistance to low-income residents of McLean and Livingston Counties.

Scholarships awarded

The Bohemian Lawyers Association of Chicago presented five law student scholarships during its annual dinner May 20. The awards to Timothy F. Dobry and Eva Jichova of The John Marshall Law School will be matched by the school.

Other recipients are Brandy Marie Fritz, University of Notre Dame Law School; Peter M. Stasiewicz, Washington University School of Law, and William H. Voller III, Chicago-Kent College of Law.

Epilogue

Leonard Baloun

Former Illinois attorney Leonard E. Baloun died March 2 at age 73 in Spokane, Wash. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1955 and became inactive in 2000.

John Bixler

Retired Chicago attorney John Donovan Bixler, a former partner in Winston & Strawn, died recently at age 70 of Parkinson's disease. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1959. A Fellow of the American Bar Association, he was secretary of the Cradle Society of Evanston.

Sherman Booth

Retired Chicago attorney Sherman Booth, a former Wilmette resident, died March 27 at age 93. A graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, he was an attorney for the federal Office of Price Administration and general counsel to the Electronics Supply Office. He moved to Sarasota, Fla., in 1975.

Phillip Citrin

Retired Chicago attorney Phillip M. Citrin, who for 25 years was a writer and performer in the Chicago Bar Association Christmas Spirits show, died May 17 at age 72 of diabetes in Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas.

A 1956 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, Mr. Citrin practiced matrimonial law for several years with Davis, Jones & Baer before beginning his own practice. He retired in 1989.

Beginning in 1965, Mr. Citrin joined E. Leonard Rubin and Julian Frazin in developing satiric Christmas Spirits skits and songs about high-profile individuals in the law and politics. His roles included Yasser Arafat, Robert Bork and Henry Kissinger.

After retiring, he lived in Santa Fe, N.M., and Cape d'Antifer, France, before settling in Houston.

Maxwell Freudenberg

Patent attorney Maxwell C. Freudenberg, a native of Peru, Ill., who grew up in LaSalle, died Jan. 4 at age 78 in Four Corners Health Care Center, Durango, Colo.

After service in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Mr. Freudenberg received a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois and a law degree from George Washington University.

After serving as patent counsel to Westinghouse Electric during the 1950s, he entered private practice. He was a law partner in Durango with a son, Ken Freudenberg.

L. Warren Golden

Retired Illinois attorney L. Warren Golden died April 17 at age 71 in Town and Country, Mo. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1957 and had been inactive for the past eight years.

Morton Haberman

Chicago attorney Morton Jay Haberman, a partner in Fumel & Haberman, died March 12 at age 74. He was a 1955 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law.
