Clarence Ruddy honored as lawyer, community leader

By Stephen Anderson

The opportunities to serve a community and to observe the ethical principles of a law practice guided Clarence John Ruddy during 58 years as an active Aurora attorney.

Never fully retired, Mr. Ruddy remained of counsel to Myler, Ruddy & McTavish from 1985 until his death on June 21 of cardiac pulmonary failure, one day after his 99th birthday.

A 1927 graduate of the University of Notre Dame Law School, where he established the publication now known as the Notre Dame Law Review, he began his practice in Aurora that year.

For several years, he was a partner in Alschuler, Putnam, Johnson & Ruddy, and in 1951 joined Charles J. Myler in the firm where his son, Philip C. Ruddy, is a partner. Another son, Clarence John Ruddy Jr., is a partner in Ruddy & Varga.

"He saw being a lawyer as not only a noble profession, but one that allows a person to truly help those less fortunate and from all walks of life," Philip Ruddy said. "Ethics and the client came first before making money," Myler added.

Clarence Ruddy received the Community Service Award of the Kane County Bar Association in 1986 in recognition of his long record of leadership that included being president of the bar association in 1944-45.

He was a founder of the Aurora Foundation and past president of the Aurora War Fund and the Chamber of Commerce, and he helped raise funds for many institutions, such as Copley and Mercy Hospitals and Holy Angels Church.

Mr. Ruddy's devotion to the ethics of the profession led him to become involved in the Illinois State Bar Association. He chaired the Committee on Public Service in 1959-60. He was a member of the Committee on Professional Ethics from 1960 to 1965 and was its chair in 1963-64.

Also a member of the Committee on Unauthorized Practice from 1967 to 1978, Mr. Ruddy was its chair in 1976-77. He served on the Committee on Public Relations from 1978 to 1984, and was vice chair for a year.

He was appointed to the special ISBA committees on the Illinois Professional Associations Act (1968-69), the Professional Service Corporations Act (1969-72), and the Family Law Study (1970-72).

Mr. Ruddy was an assistant Illinois attorney general from 1933 to 1941 and a special assistant attorney general from 1961 to 1969. A past chair of the Kane County Democrats, he was appointed to the Electoral College in 1937 and met President Franklin Delano Roosevelt at the White House after his second inauguration.

A 65-year member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Mr. Ruddy was a past supreme governor who received the Pilgrim Degree of Merit in 1942. He was governor of the Aurora lodge for four terms and general counsel for more than 20 years.

Retired jurist Peyton Kunce a pioneer for disadvantaged

Peyton H. Kunce of Murphysboro, a retired judge and appellate justice, died June 8 at age 85 in his home. He received the ISBA Award of Merit in 1976 for outstanding contributions in civic, social, community and public service.
