Criminal dispositions, consequences are seminar topics

"Truth or Consequences: A Practitioner's Guide to Criminal Dispositions and Collateral Consequences," an ISBA Law Ed Series seminar, will be presented Friday afternoons, Sept. 17 at the Par-a-Dice Hotel in East Peoria, and Oct. 22 in the Chicago Regional Office.

The seminar is sponsored by the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section, with participation from the Criminal Justice Section, the International and Immigration Law Section and the Young Lawyers Division.

Program coordinators are Michele M. Jochner, a member of the ISBA Board of Governors, past chair of the General Practice Section Council and law clerk to Chief Justice Mary Ann G. McMorrow, and ISBA Assembly member Julie Ann Sebastian, a section council member and assistant Cook County state's attorney. The schedule follows.

Fraud issues in health care aired Sept. 17

An ISBA luncheon seminar on new health care fraud and regulatory compliance issues will be presented Friday, Sept. 17, in the Chicago Regional Office by the Health Care Section. Teleconferencing will be available.

Gadi Weinreich, a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal, will be the speaker for "Stark Law Phase II Regulations: An Overview for the Health Care Lawyer." The new regulations became effective July 26.

Weinreich represents a broad array of health care organizations, such as integrated delivery networks, physicians, hospitals, academic medical centers, insurers and third-party payers, pharmaceutical and medical-surgical manufacturers, group purchasers, clinical and pathology laboratories, and equipment suppliers.

A 1987 graduate of the Harvard Law School, Weinreich is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association Health Law Section. He is the author of "Stark II, Phase II: Highlights and Preliminary Analysis" in the April 1 issue of BNA Health Reporter.

Readmission sought

The ISBA has been notified that Ray Jeffrey Cohen has filed a petition with the Illinois Supreme Court for readmission to the practice law. Cohen was admitted to the Illinois bar on Nov. 18, 1965, and was disbarred on May 20, 1988.

Human Rights Department officials explain procedures

The fall schedule of ISBA Law Ed Series seminars includes a Springfield luncheon program Wednesday, Sept. 22, that is sponsored by the Labor and Employment Law Section and the Illinois Department of Human Rights.

Titled "Effective Representation Before the Illinois Department of Human Rights: Useful Practice Tips to Advocate Successfully for Your Clients," the seminar will take place from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Illinois Education Association, 3440 Liberty Drive.

Raymundo R. Luna of Chicago, chief legal counsel for the Department of Human Rights, is the program coordinator and moderator. Other speakers are Alice M. Ralph, manager of the department's Charge Processing Division, and Raquel C. Guerra, program administrator.

The agency investigates charges that allege unlawful employment discrimination under Illinois statutes. The panelists will follow such a charge through the investigative process and provide useful tips on effective representation.

Discussion topics include intake and questionnaire, verified response, position statements, mediation, investigation, fact-finding conference, notices of default and dismissal, request for review, and direct appeal.

SIU Law promotes Whitfield to associate dean position

Associate Law Prof. Wenona Y. Whitfield of Carbondale, a member of the ISBA Committee on Continuing Legal Education, was appointed associate dean for academic affairs at the Southern Illinois University School of Law on July 2.

She replaced Mary C. Rudasill, an associate professor and director of the law school's clinical program, who had been an associate dean since 1999.

A 1977 graduate of the law school who joined its faculty in 1981, Whitfield will deal with academic issues of students and curriculum, and revamp policies on recruitment and supervision of adjunct professors.

A member of the Special Committee on the ISBA Future of the Courts Conference, which was held in 2002, she served previously on the Family Law Section Council and the Committee on Community Involvement.

Whitfield was a visiting professor at the William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minn., last year. The recipient of two Fulbright grants, she taught at Tsinghua University in Beijing in 2001 and at the University of Ghana in 1991-92.

"She has a wealth of experience as a law teacher and a member of the law school community," said SIU Law Dean Peter C. Alexander. "She has high integrity and is well-respected by faculty, staff and students."

Family Law Section plans updates Sept. 27, Oct. 4

The ISBA Family Law Section will present an update seminar titled "Unconventional Topics in Family Law" on Monday, Sept. 27, at the Radisson Hotel, Bloomington, and Monday, Oct. 4, at the Chicago Athletic Association.

Board to meet Oct. 8 in Galena

The next meeting of the ISBA Board of Governors will be convened by President Ole Bly Pace III of Sterling at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at Eagle Ridge Inn, Galena.

Subsequent meetings of the Board of Governors are scheduled on the following Fridays: Nov. 12, Four Seasons Hotel, Chicago; Jan. 28, Westin River North Hotel, Chicago; April 8, Chicago location; May 13, Renaissance Hotel, Springfield.
