Hinshaw partner Michael Kelly helped elect Nellie Fox to Hall By Stephen Anderson E. Michael Kelly was a successful and respected defense attorney, and a partner in Hinshaw & Culbertson who served on the firm's Management Committee and Executive Committee. He was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a founder and past president of the Chicago Inn of Court, and an appointed special state's attorney to represent Cook County Sheriff Michael Sheahan during grand jury investigations into jail conditions. But the achievement that most likely pleased him the most was the long-overdue election in 1997 of former Chicago White Sox All-Star second baseman Jacob Nelson "Nellie" Fox to the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, N.Y. Mr. Kelly, a Burr Ridge resident, died Aug. 9 at age 57 of a heart attack in Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was stricken while walking from his office to a meeting in the sheriff's office. A 1972 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, Mr. Kelly joined the Hinshaw firm that year and began developing a reputation in defense of medical malpractice lawsuits that was acknowledged by opposing counsel. His diverse client base included doctors, hospitals, medical groups, insurance companies, the Cook County public defender and the Chicago Police Department. He represented Rev. Michael Pfleger pro bono in protests against the sale of alcohol, cigarettes and drug paraphernalia to youths. A devoted White Sox fan, Mr. Kelly was a founder of the Nellie Fox Society in the 1980s. The organization grew in numbers and influence as its campaign to honor Fox gained momentum. Mr. Kelly, himself, was a Hall of Fame member at Leo High School and Michigan State University, where he played football. He was an adjunct professor of sports law at The John Marshall Law School. Philip Angelini Retired Chicago attorney Philip R. Angelini died July 29 in Hallandale, Fla., five days after his 81st birthday. Survivors include two nephews, Chicago attorneys Philip M. Angelini and Donald J. Angelini Jr. Bruce Becker Retired Peoria attorney Bruce Robert Becker died July 25 at age 62 in his Naples, Fla., residence. A 1965 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, he was a partner in Greenberg, Janssen & Becker and later of counsel to C. Edwin Walker & Associates. Survivors include a son, Robert B. Becker of Becker & Litterst, Peoria. Sherwin Bender Chicago attorney Sherwin H. Bender died recently at age 63. A 1968 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, he was an attorney for the City of Chicago for more than 30 years. He served on the board of directors of Congregation Anshe Motele. Survivors include a brother, Cook County Judge Gerald C. Bender, and a nephew, Michael Ian Bender. David Canter Chicago attorney David S. Canter, a staff member of the Cook County Commission on Human Rights, died Aug. 25 at age 81 of congestive heart failure in the University of Chicago Hospital. A 1958 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, Mr. Canter was active in social and political activities. He served on the staff of the Illinois Commerce Commission and was deputy commissioner of streets and sanitation under Chicago Mayor Harold Washington. Mr. Canter was the former editor of a Packinghouse Workers Union newspaper and publisher of Hyde Park Kenwood Voices. Raymond Carroll Chicago attorney Raymond P. Carroll died Aug. 30 at age 66 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) in the Rush North Shore Medical Center, Skokie. He was a 1963 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law. John Colmar Retired Chicago attorney John L. Colmar died Aug. 6 at age 88 of congestive heart failure in the Hospice of the North Shore, Skokie. A part-time Florida resident since 1995, he was of counsel to Johnson & Colmar, where a son, Craig P. Colmar, is a partner. A 1940 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, Mr. Colmar managed factories for Combustion Engineering Co. that produced weapons during World War II. He started a law practice in 1953 and was general counsel for several businesses. John Dienner Retired Chicago attorney John A. Dienner Jr., formerly of Evanston and Highland Park, died July 14 at age 87 in Bethesda, Md. A graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, Mr. Dienner first practiced with his father, John A. Dienner Sr., in Brown, Jackson, Boettcher & Dienner. He retired in the late 1960s and moved to Maryland in 1999. Survivors include a son, John A. Dienner III, who is of counsel to Kubasiak, Fylstra, Reizen & Rotunno, Chicago. LaVerne Dixon Retired 19th Circuit judge LaVerne Allen Dixon of Vernon Hills, formerly of Gurnee and Lake Forest, died Aug. 10 at age 94 in the Westmoreland Nursing Center. Mr. Dixon was principal of Lake Villa Grade School and taught social science at Warren Township High School while earning money to attend The John Marshall Law School, where he graduated in 1935. Mr. Dixon's law practice was interrupted by service as a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation during World War II. He was attorney for several villages. Elected Lake County probate judge in 1962, he became a circuit court judge in 1964, served as chief judge for five years, and retired in 1976. Mr. Dixon chaired the Lake County Water District for seven years and served on the boards of the Village of Gurnee and Warren Township High School. He chaired the Lake County chapter of Red Cross. Jerome Ettelson Retired Chicago attorney Jerome L. Ettelson died Sept. 6 at age 86 of heart failure in St. Joseph Hospital. A 1941 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, he served on the Army Judge Advocate General's Office during World War II and became a captain. Mr. Ettelson joined D'Ancona & Pflaum in 1946 and was made a partner in 1954. He retired in 1989. He endowed a scholarship fund at the Northwestern University School of Law. A past president of the Francis W. Parker School Parents' Association, he served on the board of trustees. He was a board member of the Hertz Foundation for 30 years. Ann Benedek Frank Assistant Cook County state's attorney Ann L. Benedek Frank died Aug. 5 at age 49 of breast cancer in Evanston Hospital. A Winnetka resident, she was supervisor of criminal appeals. A 1979 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, where her mother had graduated in 1941, Mrs. Frank was with the state's attorney's office until March, when she took leave of absence. Survivors include a brother, Los Angeles defense attorney John Benedek. S. David Friedlander Retired Chicago attorney S. Davis Friedlander died Aug. 21 at age 90 in Boca Raton, Fla. He was a 1940 graduate of The John Marshall Law School. Shawn Kerry Hankins Mokena attorney Shawn Kerry Hankins, a resident of Frankfort, died Aug. 6 of an apparent heart attack while jogging on the Plank Road Trail. He was a partner in Kirk, Ehlers & Hankins. A member of the Illinois bar since 1980, Mr. Hankins was a Frankfort Township trustee. He was a founder of the Frankfort Square Homeowners' Association and the Frankfort Square Park District. Peter Howard Retired corporate attorney Peter M. Howard, formerly of Wilmette, died Sept. 5 at age 62 of melanoma in his Delaplane, Va., home. A 1965 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, he was an infantry officer in Korea and Vietnam, and a Ranger instructor. Mr. Howard received a law degree in 1973 at Northwestern University. He began his legal career with the Santa Fe Railroad in Chicago and later was with the Mobil Oil Corp. in New York, Denver and Washington, D.C. Robert Hutchens Retired Urbana attorney Robert Sims Hutchens died Feb. 3 at age 90. A 1938 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, he owned and managed the Associates Abstract Co. in Champaign. George Javaras Chicago attorney George B. Javaras, a partner in Kirkland & Ellis, died Aug. 5 at age 65 of chronic lymphocytic leukemia in Northwestern Memorial Hospital. |
