A 1964 cum laude graduate of the University of Chicago Law School who held a Weymouth Kirkland Foundation scholarship, he practiced for three years in the office of tax legislative counsel at the U.S. Treasury Department.

Returning to Chicago in 1967, Mr. Javaras joined Kirkland & Ellis and helped establish its tax law department. He also was an adjunct professor in the graduate tax program at the Chicago-Kent College of Law.

Robert Kirby

Retired railroad attorney Robert S. Kirby died Aug. 29 at age 79 of melanoma in his Northfield home. After service in the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II, he graduated in 1950 from the University of Illinois College of Law.

Mr. Kirby practiced with Frisch & Cox for three years before joining the legal staff of the Illinois Central Railroad. He retired in 1987 as executive vice president and general counsel of IC Industries.

He was corporate counsel to Henrotin Hospital and a board member of the Washington Square Health Foundation.

James Kopeny

Palatine attorney James Allen Kopeny died recently at age 59. A 1996 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, he previously practiced with the Law Offices of John Scott Hoff in Chicago.

Donald Larmee

Donald H. Larmee of Arlington Heights, retired president of the Tax Executive Institute, died Aug. 20 at age 92. He was a 1938 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. In retirement, Mr. Larmee volunteered with the Executive Service Corps and at Holy Family Hospital.

Victor Lello

Retired Chicago attorney Victor W. Lello died July 26 at age 90. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law.

Alexander Matug

Palos Heights attorney Alexander P. Matug died recently at age 58. He was a 1972 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law.

James Muench

Retired Chicago attorney James J. Muench died recently at age 95 in the Presbyterian Home, Evanston. A 1935 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, he practiced for 51 years with his brother, Morgan Muench, who survives.

A member of the Kiwanis Club with 52 years of perfect attendance, Mr. Muench compiled a book of invocations that was adopted by Kiwanis International for use in opening meetings around the world. He received the George F. Hixon Fellow Award in 2002 for outstanding service.

Mr. Muench and his wife became Affiliates of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul in 1979 for many years of volunteer service for Marillac High School. He was a pro bono volunteer at the Howard Area Community Center legal clinic.

Thomas O'Brien

Thomas M. O'Brien of Palatine died Aug. 22 at age 55 of a heart attack in his home. He was assistant general counsel in the Division of Disabilities and Behavioral Health Services of the Illinois Department of Human Services.

A 1974 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law, Mr. O'Brien became an attorney for the Air Force and had a private practice before joining the Human Services Department in 1994. He was a former Palatine village clerk.

Henry Parsons

Moline attorney Henry Wilton Parsons died Aug. 24 at age 93 in Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. He was secretary-treasurer of the Rock Island County Bar Association for 32 years.

A 1935 cum laude graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, Mr. Parsons began his practice with his father, Wilton Parsons, who opened the law office in 1897. Although illness caused Henry Parsons to close the office last year, he continued to do legal work in his home.

During World War II, Mr. Parsons served in the Army, first as a weather observer and later in courts and boards. He did investigative work for the 8th Service Command in Texas and Oklahoma.

Mr. Parsons served on the Moline Dist. 40 School Board for 12 years and was a member of the Illinois Association of School Boards. He also served on the boards of the YMCA, the Bethany Home, the Moline Welfare Association and the Cleveland King's Daughters Home.

Andre Prypchan

Retired Chicago attorney Andre Bohdan Prypchan died Aug. 19 at age 50. Admitted to the Illinois bar in 1980, he was assistant district counsel for the Army Corps of Engineers for 23 years.

Kathleen Schoene

St. Louis attorney Kathleen S. Schoene, a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, died Aug. 25 at age 51 of ovarian cancer at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. She was president of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis in 1995-96.

A 1982 graduate of the Washington University School of Law, Ms. Schoene had a master's degree in library science. She practiced with Peper, Martin from 1982 until 2000, when she became chair of the new Mergers and Acquisitions Department at Armstrong Teasdale.

Ms. Schoene received the Daily Record Justice Award in April for significant contributions to her area of expertise and positive community influence. She was co-chair of the Missouri Bar Committee on Gender and Justice.

David Spannraft

Waukegan attorney David J. Spannraft died Aug. 12 at age 33. A 1996 honors graduate of the Loyola University School of Law, he had been a partner in Rosing, Berks, Sinton & Spannraft since 1998.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa and an Eagle Scout, Mr. Spannraft served on the leadership committee of the Prairie State Campaign for Legal Services of the Lake County Bar Association. He recently studied family law mediation at DePaul University.

Edward Telling

Rockford attorney Edward R. Telling III died Aug. 13 at age 60 of cancer. A 1970 graduate of the University of Cincinnati Law School, he was senior litigation attorney at Williams & McCarthy, where he had practiced for 32 years.

A commissioner of the Greater Rockford Airport Authority from 1999 until his resignation in July, Mr. Telling was a trustee of the Boys and Girls Club of Rockford, the Roc-Vale Children's Home and the Floberg Center for Children.

A past president of Rockford Country Club, he chaired a pro-am golf tournament that raised funds for youth organizations in the community. A grove of white birch trees will be planted in Mr. Telling's memory on the Bicentennial Path along the Rock River, where he ran regularly.

William Trapp

Springfield attorney William Frederick Trapp died Aug. 14 at age 52 in his home. A 1976 graduate of the Washington University School of Law, he was an assistant Sangamon County state's attorney from 1977 to 1981.

Mr. Trapp joined Brown, Hay & Stephens in 1981 in civil litigation and became a partner in 1984. He served on the governing boards of the Lincoln Douglas Inn of Court, the Sojourn Women's Center and the Vachel Lindsay Association.

Robert Wright

Retired Chicago attorney Robert W. Wright, a resident of Harvard, died Aug. 8 at age 76 of leukemia in Rush University Medical Center, Chicago.

A 1954 graduate of Harvard Law School, Mr. Wright joined MacLeish, Spray, Price & Underwood. The law firm was named Keck, Mahin & Cate when he retired in 1990.

A former Kenilworth resident, he was a village trustee from 1982 to 1985 and village president from 1985 to 1989. He served on the New Trier Mental Health Advisory Board.

Esther Zackler

Esther Polishuck Zackler of Lincolnwood, a 1941 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, died Aug. 14 at age 86 in St. Francis Hospital, Evanston, after a stroke. She had a practice in labor-management relations until 1945.

An honorary lifetime member of the World Zionist Organization and delegate to all of its congresses since 1970, Mrs. Zackler was past national president of Na-amat USA, the Women's Labor Zionist Organization of America.

She served on the Illinois Status of Women Commission and the Board of Jewish Education. A member of the Jewish national Fund board, Mrs. Zackler chaired the women's division of State of Israel Bonds. She was the founder of the Chicago Zionist Federation.
