George Hoban became partner with Joseph Hinshaw in 1938 Retired Chicago corporate attorney George S. Hoban, who was of counsel to Hinshaw & Culbertson, died Jan. 27 at age 90 in Austin, Texas. He retired from full-time practice in 1979. A 1938 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, Mr. Hoban joined the practice of Joseph H. Hinshaw, who became president of the Illinois State Bar Association in 1951 and founded the Illinois Bar Foundation. Mr. Hoban served in the Army Judge Advocate General Corps during World War II and went on to become managing partner of Hinshaw, Culbertson, Moelman, Hoban & Fuller. He was a member of the ISBA Committee on Bar Economics from 1960 to 1964, and was its chair for two years. He also served on the Committee on Antitrust Law and the Federal Taxation Section Council. General counsel to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons for several years, Mr. Hoban was counsel to Duplex Products and Northwest Hospital and a member of the Ripon College Board of Trustees. Survivors include a son, Robert G. Hoban of McDermott, Will & Emery, Chicago. W. Timothy Baetz Retired Chicago attorney W. Timothy Baetz died Jan. 17 at age 60 in Palm Springs, Calif., of a heart attack during a golfing trip. A former partner in McDermott, Will & Emery, he retired in 2001 to spend more time with his family. A 1969 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, Mr. Baetz served in the Army Reserves during the Vietnam War. An authority on estate planning and taxation, he testified in U.S. House and Senate committees on the Internal Revenue Code. He was a past chair of the Chicago bar Association Trust Law Committee and a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Philip Basvic Retired criminal defense attorney and author Philip Basvic, a resident of Crown Point, Ind., died Jan. 23 at age 93. A 1950 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, he had practices in Chicago and Oak Lawn. Thomas Brady Retired Oak Park attorney Thomas J. Brady, formerly of Elmhurst, died in January at age 91, He was a 1952 graduate of The John Marshall Law School. Victor Carney Retired Chicago attorney Victor M. Carney died Jan. 20 at age 50 in his home as a result of multiple sclerosis, which he had for 18 years. He was a 1980 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law. After two years as a tax lawyer for Price Waterhouse, Mr. Carney moved to the McDonald's Corp. in Oak Brook. In 1990, he joined Carney & Brothers, the law firm of his brother, Demetrius E. Carney, but went on disability a few years later. Paul Chervin Waukegan attorney Paul S. Chervin died Jan. 5 at age 60 in his home. He was managing partner in the Waukegan office of Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon. A 1967 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, Mr. Chervin joined the firm of McClory, Lonchar, Nordigan & Clark. He was an assistant Lake County public defender from 1969 until 1972, when be became a sole practitioner. Mr. Chervin was counsel to the City of Waukegan, the Waukegan Park District, and fire protection districts in Countryside, Long Grove, Lake Villa, Lake Zurich and Libertyville. Retired general counsel of the Veridian Health Advisory Board, he served on the boards of the Lake County Chamber of Commerce and Victory Memorial Hospital, and was a member of the Friends of Genesee Theatre. Peter Deuel Retired Chicago attorney Peter MacArthur Deuel, a resident of Glenview, died Jan. 12 at age 69 of a heart attack in the ManorCare Nursing Home, Northbrook. Born in Berlin while his father was a correspondent for the Chicago Daily News, Mr. Deuel was a reporter for the Daily News and Chicago Sun-Times for several years. In the early 1970s he became associate Cook County circuit clerk and subsequently studied law at the Loyola University School of Law, where he graduated in 1988. In addition to a private practice, he was an assistant to Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas. Winfield Durbin Retired Chicago attorney Winfield Taylor Durbin II died Jan. 24 at age 92 in his home. He was a 1937 graduate of Harvard Law School. Richard Ferri Chicago attorney Richard H. Ferri, an Oak Park resident, died Jan. 4 at age 56 of a heart attack while on vacation in Mexico. He was a partner in Kelly, Olson, Michod, DeHaan & Richter. A former assistant Cook County public defender in the Juvenile Division, Mr. Ferri was a 1974 graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law. He joined the Continental National Bank litigation department in 1979 and was senior attorney for more than 10 years. In 1990, he left the bank to practice with Arnstein & Lehr. He served on the Chicago Bar Association Financial Institutions and Commercial Transactions Committees. Louis Giliberto Retired Cook County judge Louis J. Giliberto died in January. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1947. Giliberto resigned from the bench in August 1992. Charles Henry Kankakee attorney Charles O. Henry, a past president of the Kankakee County bar Association, died Jan. 7 at age 71. He was a 1959 graduate of The John Marshall Law School. Mr. Henry was attorney for the Kankakee Valley Park District for more than 40 years, often serving as treasurer and secretary until 1999. His father, C. D. Henry, was an attorney, judge and park district secretary. Harold Huebner Retired Chicago attorney Harold C. Huebner Jr., a resident of Oak Park, died in January. He was a 1942 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law. Salvatore LaPlaca Chicago attorney Salvatore G. LaPlaca died Feb. 2 at age 80. A 1951 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law, he was of counsel to Weinberg Richmond. A veteran of Army artillery service in Europe during World War II, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, Mr. LaPlaca played clarinet, cornet and accordion in an Army band after the war. He was past president of the Oak Park Sertoma Club. Thomas Lee Chicago trial attorney Thomas J. Lee, a resident of Glenview, died Jan. 14 at age 67 of throat cancer in the University of Chicago Hospital. A 1963 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, Mr. Lee was a partner in Garbutt, Jacobsen & Lee for several years before forming Thomas J. Lee Ltd. |
