The College of Law will conduct its 11th annual Clifford Symposium on Civil Justice, Tort Law and Social Policy on Thursday and Friday, April 14-15. The topic is "Who Feels Their Pain? The Challenge of Non-economic Damages in Civil Litigation."

Ad regulation law aired at Leo Burnett

Several attorneys will participate in the workshop, "How to Make Advertising Self-Regulation Work for You," that begins at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, at Leo Burnett Worldwide in Chicago.

The insiders' guide to navigating a case through the process of the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus is sponsored by the National Advertising Review Council (NARC).

After welcoming remarks by NARC President James Guthrie, the program will begin with the presentation, Self-Regulation in the Global Spotlight, by Chicago attorney Carla R. Michelotti, Leo Burnett's executive vice president and general counsel.

A national authority on advertising and communications issues, such as commercial free speech and privacy, Michelotti chairs the American Advertising Federation and its Government Affairs Committee, and is vice president for self-regulation of the International Advertising Association.

A graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, she is a past chair of the ISBA Intellectual Property Law Section Council and the Fellows of the Illinois Bar Foundation and a former member of the ISBA Board of Governors.

Other workshop presentations include The NAD Experience, and its role in shaping advertising and advising clients, with Ross M. Weinstein of Kirkland & Ellis and Mark McGowan, vice president-legal of the Pepsico Beverage and Food Division.

A mock NAD challenge by three staff attorneys will provide instructions on navigating procedures, tools for advocacy, potential pitfalls, and presentation of scientific evidence.

New downstate solo practitioners and small firm lawyers shouldn't miss the ISBA Law Ed Series seminar, "Hanging Out Your Shingle Without Hanging Yourself," that will take place Friday, May 6, at the Collinsville Holiday Inn.

The seminar is conducted by the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section, the Young Lawyers Division and the Women's Bar Association of Illinois. Highlights will be published in the next Bar News.

ACLU Illinois

A public conference on communicating concerns about threats to constitutional values and liberties will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Hawthorn Suites, Champaign, by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois. Appellate Lawyers

The DCBA has leased 3,600 square feet of space on the third floor of the 18th Circuit Judicial Center, Wheaton, for an Attorney Resource Center where lawyers can congregate while they are in the courthouse.
