Lake County colleagues give support to victim of cancer

Lake County colleagues of senior assistant public defender Michael E. Simmons have rallied to help sustain the financial burden of his battle with cancer.

Led by Waukegan attorney Daniel R. Zeit of Fox, Lunardi & Zeit, with Aimee Zeit and Lisa Page, the legal community held a reception March 26 at which about $19,000 was contributed to Simmons and his wife, Niccole.

More than monetary support, the generosity and concern of the Lake County bench and bar made a needed physical and psychological impact on Simmons, a former member of the ISBA Board of Governors.

"I was virtually surrounded by a sea of individuals expelling love, compassion and kindness that empowered me with the strength to walk tall, stand straight and battle my illness head on," he wrote in a letter published in the May issue of the bar association magazine.

"As the night progressed, I became stronger and stronger, realizing that this event was much more than just a fund raiser; it had a mystical healing quality," he added. "I have never been more honored and felt more loved and cared for..."

Stephen M. Komie brought Simmons' situation to the attention of fellow members of the ISBA Board of Governors in April. He told the board that Simmons had been hospitalized in January and February and would undergo follow-up treatments for several months.

"It is my further understanding Michael was a contract public defender, did not have hospital insurance, nor disability insurance," Komie said. "His illness has forced him out of a job and led to extreme hardship for his wife and children."

The board adopted Komie's motion to assist the Lake County bar in subsequent fund-raising events, to encourage the Illinois Bar Foundation to provide appropriate subsistence, and to publicize the matter for the interest of ISBA members who wish to make contributions.

For more information, call Daniel Zeit at (847) 336-2090.

YLD assists kids in courts

ISBA members have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to the Children's Assistance Fund since it was created eight years ago by the Young Lawyers Division.

This summer, the YLD will sponsor an Inaugural Golf Classic on Tuesday, July 26, as a benefit for the kids' fund, which is administered by the Illinois Bar Foundation.
