Kane County Bar presents awards Judge Judith A. Brawka of the 16th Circuit received the Kane County Bar Association Community Service Award during the annual dinner June 9 in Elgin. She was honored for community commitments that include volunteering with the Court Appointed Special Advocates. Julie L. Cibulskis of Lindner, Speers & Reuland, Aurora, was recognized as Outstanding New Lawyer. She is a member of the KCBA board and chair of the Continuing Legal Education Committee. The bar association presented a Liberty Bell Award to Halle Mikyska, librarian of the Kane County Law Library, for efforts to promote respect for the legal system and the rule of law. A volunteer with the Juvenile Justice Center, Mikyska recently established a Judges Reading Nights program. She is president of the DuPage Library System board. * * * The Illinois Trial Lawyers Association presented its Leonard M. Ring Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously to Robert J. Cooney Jr. during the annual dinner June 3 in Oak Brook. Cooney, who died in 1995, was a founding partner in Cooney & Stenn and Cooney & Conway. ITLA Amicus Volunteer Awards were given to James Paul Costello, Barry G. Doyle, Timothy W. Heath, Heather A. Mulligan, Bruce R. Pfaff, J. Ryan Potts, Stanley L. Tucker and Brian M. Wendler. * * * Sandra J. Birdsall of Hasselberg, Williams, Grebe, Snodgrass & Birdsall, Peoria, has received the 2005 Athena Award from the Heartland Partnership for promoting leadership opportunities for women. She is a member of the ISBA Real Estate Law Section Council. A board member of the Nature Conservancy and University of Illinois-Peoria School of Medicine, Birdsall has been a leader in the Teen Pregnancy Task Force and other community initiatives. * * * Two attorneys are among eight alumni of Southern Illinois University who were honored during recent commencement ceremonies. The School of Law presented an Alumni Achievement Award to Paul Matalonis of Carbondale, a 21-year staff attorney with Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation. He coordinates its Homeless Legal Assistance Project and Housing Law Task Force. William A. Fenwick, a partner in Fenwick & West, Aurora, received a Distinguished Service Award from the School of Business and Administration for pro bono legal service to charitable organizations that serve the public interest. Robert Heckenkamp was president of ISBA, ITLA The ISBA Assembly observed a moment of silence June 18 in memory of retired Springfield attorney Robert G. Heckenkamp. A past president of both the Illinois State Bar Association and the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, he died June 11 at age 81 in St. John's Hospital. A former partner in Heckenkamp, Simhauser, Ward & Zerkle, Mr. Heckenkamp was honored in 1999 as an ISBA Senior Counsellor for 50 years of service to the association and profession. A 1949 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, he had served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a law clerk from 1949 to 1952 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District, and was an assistant U.S. attorney there from 1951 to 1953. A member of the ISBA Tort Law Section Council from 1972 to 1976 and its secretary in 1975-76, Mr. Heckenkamp was elected to the Board of Governors in 1976. He was elected ISBA third vice president in 1977 and served simultaneously as ITLA president in 1977-78. After his term as ISBA president in 1980-81 and his tenure on the Board of Governors ended in 1982, Mr. Heckenkamp served on the Assembly through 1984. He chaired the Committee on Legislation in 1981-82 and was a member of the Bench and Bar Section Council (1983-85) and the Joint Committee on Merit Selection (1985-86). He served on the Committee on Judicial Appointments (1988-92), the Committee on Judicial Evaluations (1990-94), the Committee on Cameras in the Courtroom (1990-92), the Committee on Judicial Advisory Polls (1995-98), and the Committee on the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission (1995-2002). Mr. Heckenkamp served on the Illinois Bar Foundation Board of Directors from 1993 to 1999 and was a Fellow of the foundation. He was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and an honorary member of the Inns of Court. Railroad incident claims lawyer Chicago appellate litigator Morgan Milne Strand died June 22 at age 39 at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, of injuries after being struck the previous morning by a train at a Riverside railroad crossing. A 1990 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law, Mrs. Strand was chair of the Appellate Practice Group at Cassiday, Schade & Gloor. She handled trials and appeals in medical malpractice, insurance coverage and product liability cases. In its announcement, the law firm said, "Thoughtful, gracious and an exceptional lawyer, she was relied upon by all who worked with her as a trusted colleague, a faithful friend, and a constant source of professional inspiration." Earlier, Mrs. Strand had been a law clerk to Justice Michael A. Bilandic in both the Appellate and Supreme Courts. A member of the Appellate Lawyers Association, she spoke recently at a seminar on appellate brief writing for the Illinois Attorney General's Office. Survivors include her husband, Jeffrey B. Strand, chief financial officer for the ISBA Mutual Insurance Co. Joan Connor Retired Evanston real estate attorney Joan Webster Connor died June 27 at age 72 of lung cancer in the Hospice of the North Shore, Skokie. A graduate of the George Washington University Law School, she was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1959. Mrs. Connor practiced with Chicago Title and Trust before becoming a partner in Ross & Hardies. She was elected in 1969 as an Evanston alderman and moved to Wilmette in 1974. Seymour Cooperman Retired Chicago attorney Seymour A. Cooperman died in June at age 97. A 1933 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, he was employed for several years by the Clinton Building Corp. Anita Crawford Retired Hillsboro attorney Anita C. Crawford died May 18 at age 91 in Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. She graduated in 1953 from the Lincoln College of Law after working as a home economics teacher. Mrs. Crawford's Hillsboro practice included service as an assistant state's attorney and an assistant Illinois attorney general for child support enforcement with the Department of Public Aid. Frederick Czerwionka Chicago attorney Frederick J. Czerwionka, formerly of Park Ridge, died June 4 at age 56. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1973. J. Frank Daly LaGrange attorney John Frank Daly, a resident of Indian Head Park, died June 14 at age 76. He was a 1955 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law. A trust officer, senior vice president and legal counsel for Cicero State Bank and Pinnacle Bank, Mr. Daly served on the boards of the Boys Club of Cicero and the Community Chest, for which he earned a Governor's Award. Herman DeKoven Retired Chicago labor law attorney Herman J. DeKoven died recently at age 92. He was of counsel to Laner, Muchin, Dombrow, Becker, Levin & Tominberg, formerly Dorfman, DeKoven & Cohen. A 1936 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School and member of Phi Beta Kappa, Mr. DeKoven was supervising attorney for the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C., from 1941 to 1953. Isaiah Dorfman Retired Chicago attorney Isaiah Sol Dorfman died June 1 at age 98 in Northwestern Memorial Hospital of pneumonia and heart failure. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, he graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1931, the year he became a U.S. citizen. After law school, Mr. Dorfman practiced in labor legislation with the federal government and was chief of the special litigation unit of the National Labor Relations Board from 1937 to 1942. During World War II, he was an agent of the Office of Strategic Services in London. After the war Mr. Dorfman was a founding partner in the labor law firm of Dorfman, DeKoven & Cohen, which became Dorfman, Cohen, Laner & Muchin, and now is Laner, Muchin, Dombrow, Becker, Levin & Tominberg. He retired in 1982. In his honor, the University of Chicago awards an Isaiah S. Dorfman Prize for Outstanding Work in Labor Law. Malcolm Durr Retired Alton attorney Malcolm Durr died June 8 at age 88 in Alton Memorial Hospital. A 1940 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, he served during World War II in the Army Air Corps as chief navigator on a B-17 bomber in Europe. Among the 36 medals he earned in military service were six Distinguished Flying Crosses, five Air Medals, the Great Patriot War Medal from the U.S.S.R., and the Croix de Guerre from France. Mr. Durr practiced with Green & Hoagland in Alton before opening a solo practice. He retired in 2002. Irving Golden Retired Oak Park attorney Irving Reuven Golden died June 22 at age 98. Admitted to the Illinois bar in 1933, he was the owner of the Acme Store Fixture Co. Porter Green Retired Nashville attorney Porter Eugene "Jack" Green died May 27 at age 93 in the Washington County Hospital. A 1939 graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law, he was a Navy lieutenant commander in the Pacific during World War II. In addition to his law practice, Mr. Green was a county judge from 1958 to 1962. He retired in 1987 as senior partner in Green, Cross & Pearcy. A past president of the Nashville Community High School board and the Washington County Historical Society, Mr. Green was chair of the County Welfare Board, a past commander of the American Legion post and a director of First National Bank of Okawville. Richard Grummon Retired Springfield personal injury attorney Richard R. Grummon died May 22 at age 86 in his home. A 1951 graduate of the Lincoln College of Law, he had served in the Army in Europe during World War II. Mr. Grummon was past president of the Springfield Board of Education and the YMCA board. He was a charter member of World Peace Through Law and the World Lawyers Association, and a founding member of the World Affairs Council of Central Illinois. He served on the boards of the Springfield Mental Health Association and Goodwill Industries, and chaired the Abraham Lincoln chapter of Boy Scouts of America. Richard Husted East Dundee and Sycamore attorney Richard W. Husted, a resident of Hampshire, died April 19 at age 84 in the Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood. Mr. Husted was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1950 after Army service during World War II. He was elected Greene County state's attorney in 1952. Linzey Jones Chicago attorney Linzey Donald Jones Sr. died June 8 at age 84. A 1962 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, he was a steelworker and chair of a union grievance committee while studying law. Formerly with Cornfield & Feldman, Mr. Jones was a commissioner of the Illinois Industrial Commission from 1990 to 1997. Survivors include a son, Linzey D. Jones Jr. of Pugh, Jones, Johnson & Quandt. James Kellogg Retired Chicago attorney James C. Kellogg, formerly of Oak Park, died June 27 at age 90 in a nursing home in Yellow Springs, Ohio. A 1940 graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law, he worked in a roller skate factory while studying law. After service as an Army captain in the Persian Gulf during World War II, Mr. Kellogg had a downtown sole practice until his retirement in 1994. Survivors include a son, Dennis Jim Kellogg of Sheats & Kellogg, Chicago. Raymond Kinzie Retired Chicago banking attorney Raymond Wyant Kinzie, an Oak Park resident, died May 18 at age 74. A 1955 graduate of the Yale University Law School, he was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1956. Mr. Kinzie was vice president and trust officer of the Lakeview Trust and Savings Bank before becoming senior vice president in the LaSalle Bank Wealth Management Group. He served for 25 years on the board of the Land Trust Council of Illinois and also was a board member of Ravenswood Hospital. Leo Lanigan Retired Chicago attorney Leo Anthony Lanigan Jr., a resident of Braceville, died June 25 at age 85 in his home. He graduated in 1948 from the Northwestern University School of Law after service in the Army Air Corps in Texas during World War II. After 20 years in private practice, Mr. Lanigan was an assistant Cook County public defender in the Criminal Division for 18 years. Lawrence Lannon Former Chicago attorney Lawrence Stephan Lannon, a resident of Whitewater, Wis., died in June at age 82. A 1957 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, he once owned Lannon & Co. in Skokie. |
