For Immediate Release
Kankakee County Sheriff Timothy Bukowski will be presented with the 2005 Law Enforcement Award from the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) on Wednesday, May 4, at a meeting of the Kankakee County Bar Association at the Kankakee Country Club, 2011 Cobb Blvd.
Robert K. Downs, of Chicago, ISBA president-elect, will present the award.
The Law Enforcement Award was created to recognize sworn law enforcement officers for conduct that promotes justice and to distinguish those individuals whose service to the public brings honor and respect to the entire criminal justice system. The award is given sparingly to recognize those who truly excel in the field of law enforcement.
Sheriff Bukowski has worked diligently to encourage the construction of a state-of-the-art jail. Through his efforts, state and federal grants were identified and applied for that ultimately resulted in the new Kankakee County Detention Center. During the time that Sheriff Bukowski has been in office, the county has experienced a reduction in virtually all types of violent crime.
A frequent speaker before groups of county residents, Sheriff Bukowski has also found time to serve on the board of directors of Good Shepherd Manor, a residential facility for severely disabled men located in Momence.
In his nomination, Roger C. Elliott, president of the Kankakee County Bar Association, wrote that Sheriff Bukowski "certainly embodies what we should expect from our highest elected law enforcement officer." He continued that "Sheriff Bukowski, in a substantial way, facilitates a better understanding of the criminal justice system, encourages respect for the law and promotes justice."
The 30,000-member Illinois State Bar Association, with offices in Springfield and Chicago, provides professional services to Illinois lawyers, and education and services to the public.
