Alton Lawyer Receives Award
From Illinois State Bar Association

Joseph R. Bartylak, of Alton, associate director of the Lawyers' Assistance Program (LAP), received the Board of Governors Award from the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) during the organization's annual awards luncheon at The Abbey in Fontana, Wis., on June 18.

The award is given to ISBA members for significant service to the profession and the public.

Bartylak, a pioneer in delivery of legal services to the poor and disadvantaged, joined the staff of the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation in 1972 and became executive director in 1976. He stepped down Jan. 1 to join LAP. A member of the LAP board of directors since 1980, he was its president in 1981-82.

A member of the ISBA Assembly, Bartylak is immediate past chair of the Committee on Public Relations. He serves on the Committee on Delivery of Legal Services, which he also chaired, and the board of the Illinois Coalition for Equal Justice.

Bartylak is a Charter Fellow of the Illinois Bar Foundation and a past president of the Madison County Bar Association.

The 30,000-member ISBA, with offices in Springfield and Chicago, provides professional services to Illinois lawyers, and education and services to the public.
