SOUTH PAXTON STREET RESIDENT, A LAW STUDENT,
RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE ILLINOIS BAR FOUNDATION
Donna L. Moore, a resident of Chicago's South Paxton Street [9100 block], and a third year law student at The John Marshall Law School, is one of 11 law school students who has received a $2,000 scholarship from the Illinois Bar Foundation (IBF), the charitable arm of the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA).
Moore is staff editor of The John Marshall Law Review and treasurer of the Black Law Student Association. She has worked as a law clerk in the City of Chicago Law Department since June 2003. She interned in the U.S. Attorney's Office and was a judicial extern for Judge Marvin Aspen. Moore, who has a Master's of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, received her bachelor's degree in computer science and business from Roosevelt University.
Scholarships are awarded to ISBA law student members who are 2nd or 3rd year law students at eight Illinois law schools, two law schools in St. Louis, and one in Indiana. The criteria includes good academic standing (2.5 grade point average or above), financial need, current volunteer work and employment experience, law school extra-curricular activities, and involvement in the ISBA. The law school deans are invited to recommend three to five students, who then complete the scholarship application. After reviewing the applications, the bar foundation scholarship committee makes the final decisions.
The Illinois Bar Foundation was originally established in 1951 to provide funds to lawyers and their families who had immediate financial needs. The Foundation still makes subsistence payments each year to those who have fallen on hard times due to age or infirmity. In 2003, $34,762 in donations was made to four lawyers and/or their families.
Also in 2003, the Illinois Bar Foundation distributed $193,300 in grants to 50 nonprofit organizations statewide that are committed to enhancing our system of justice.
The Illinois Bar Foundation is located at 20 S. Clark St., Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60603, and its phone number is (312) 726-6072. Information also is available on-line at www.isba.org.
