6 law students slated for first Assembly seats

Students from six of the 13 affiliated law schools filed timely petitions for the first group of ISBA Assembly law student seats and will take office in June during the Annual Meeting.

They are George L. Schoenbeck, Chicago-Kent College of Law; Jessica M. Youngs, University of Illinois College of Law; Laura L. Pautz, The John Marshall Law School; Adam Damerow, Loyola University School of Law; Deborah A. Hilst, Northern Illinois University College of Law, and Lisa R. Turner, Southern Illinois University School of Law.

The Assembly voted in December 2004 to amend Section 4.4 of the association bylaws to create one student seat to represent each affiliated law school for the years 2005 through 2010.

Eligible candidates were to be ISBA Law Student Division chapter members in good standing who will have completed at least 15 credit hours by May 10, 2006.

Letters and nominating petitions were mailed Nov. 15 to 600 members of ISBA chapters at the 13 schools. Petitions containing signatures of 10 other students were to be submitted between Jan. 17 and Feb. 15.

Each elected delegate will serve a one-year term, beginning in June, and be eligible for no more than two consecutive terms.

In her letter to law student members, ISBA President-elect Irene F. Bahr expressed excitement at the opportunity to engage law students in the governance of the bar association.

“I believe both law students and the ISBA will be the beneficiaries of this new policy,” she added.

Membership in the ISBA Law Student Division requires payment of dues of $12 per year or $30 for three years. To apply, send an e-mail to aboucher@isba.org.
