This year's honorees are Paul E. Freehling, partner in commercial and employment litigation with Seyfarth Shaw, Chicago; Joseph B. McDonnell, partner in Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, Swansea; Michael A. Orenic, retired chief judge of the 12th Circuit in Joliet; Anthony Scariano, former first district appellate court justice and state legislator; Lois J. Wood, executive director of Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation in Alton; and Samuel H. Young, of counsel to the Lincolnwood firm of Kamensky, Rubinstein, Hochman & Delott and a former U.S. Congressman.

The Academy of Illinois Lawyers was established in 1999 to “celebrate excellence in the legal profession and to recognize lawyers throughout the state who maintain the highest professional standards,” in the words of the organization's statement of purpose.
