CLE programs offer insights for many practice areas Newly added ISBA Law Ed seminars include the following presentations.
Health Care: April 20 The promise of stem cell research and the controversy of medical spas are among topics for discussion during this morning program at the ISBA Chicago Regional Office. Ohio attorney D. Brian Hufford will review the American Medical Association's class action against United Health Care over unusual, customary and reasonable billing issues for out-of-network providers.
Employment Law: April 27 Advanced employment litigation practice issues to be covered include evaluating and negotiating severance agreements, protection orders, and removal and remand for effective choice of forum. The morning seminar at the ISBA Chicago Regional Office also will deal with application of new federal electronic discovery rules.
E-Discovery: April 30 Members of the Committee on Legal Technology will explore the whats, whys, nuts and bolts of electronic discovery in this morning program at the ISBA Chicago Regional Office. Magistrate Judge Sidney I. Schenkier will explain how recent amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure will affect the duties of lawyers and clients.
Immigration Court: May 4 Luncheon will be provided during discussion by Immigration Judge Robert D. Vinikoor on the changing practice of immigration law, and what it takes to present a successful case. He will review mistakes that judges see frequently and offer tips on preparation before hearings, and will answer questions at the ISBA Chicago Regional Office.
Guardianships: May 5 Statutory authority for the scope of representation by a guardian ad litem, attorney for the child and child representative will be covered in this Child Law Section program at the DuPage County Bar Association in Wheaton. Judges Rodney W. Equi and Patrick J. Leston of the 18th Circuit will join a panel discussion on how the statutes are administered. Luncheon will be provided.
Domestic Violence: May 10 Three ISBA committees and the Child Law Section are sponsors of this rapid-fire, day-long program at the Collinsville Holiday Inn. Aspects of order of protection pleadings and hearings will be covered, along with relief under the Crime Victims Compensation Act and issues in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender violence.
Starting a Business: May 17 The Business Advice and Financial Planning Section will explain the fundamentals of selecting the form of a new business, and compliance, governance and financing issues, in this day-long program at the ISBA Chicago Regional Office. Other concerns to be addressed include shareholder agreements, hiring and compensation, and ethical issues in representing multiple stockholders.
Civil Practice: May 18 Fourteen presentations, from proper parties to post-trial motions, will take place in this six-hour update program at the Eastland Suites Conference Center in Bloomington. The “road map through trial” covers pleadings and venues, discovery, opening statements, disclosure and requests to admit, third-party practice, administrative review, motions to dismiss, summary judgment, enforcement and relief, and closing arguments.
Labor Law: May 18, 25 Two morning update programs will cover statutory and regulatory amendments, issues raised in recent cases, and evidence calculating and refuted damages. They are scheduled May 18 at the ISBA Chicago Regional office and May 25 at the DoubleTree Hotel, Bloomington.
State/Local Tax: May 24 This morning program in the ISBA Chicago Regional Office includes developments in taxation by the Illinois Department of Revenue and local taxing bodies. Results of administrative hearings and court cases will be reviewed, along with property tax changes and legislation that affects income, sales and other taxes. |
