Mental Health Law program slated May 16 at Loyola

The ISBA Committee on Mental Health Law will conduct its annual Mental Health Law Day program from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, with the Beazley Institute for Health Law of the Loyola University School of Law in Kasbeer Hall, Chicago.

Loyola Law Prof. Mark J. Heyrman, a member of the committee, will open the program with a legislative update, and the schedule of topics and speakers includes the following.

9:45 a.m. – Primer on Psychiatry, with James Brunner, M.D., of the Madden Mental Health Center.

10:45 a.m. – Risk Management Issues for Social Service Providers, with committee vice chair Joseph T. Monahan of Monahan & Cohen, Chicago.

11:20 a.m. – Outpatient Treatment Approaches and Housing Options for Adults with Severe Mental Illness, with John I. Mayes, president, and David Daskovsky, clinical director, of Trilogy Inc.

12 noon - Luncheon period.

1 p.m. – Ethics Issues for Lawyers who Represent Persons with Diagnosed Mental Illness, with committee past chair Mark B. Epstein of Epstein & Epstein, Chicago.

1:50 p.m. – Mental Health Advocacy from a Consumer Point of View.

2:45 p.m. – Commitment and Involuntary Treatment Issues.

3:45 p.m. – Questions and answers.
