Epilogue Chicago attorney, wife perish in fire on anniversary
Chicago information technology lawyer Mark Lee Gordon died July 29 at age 55 of smoke inhalation as a result of a fire in his Lincoln Park home that also claimed the life of his wife, Rachelle Slavin Gordon. It was the morning of their 33rd wedding anniversary. A partner in McGuire Woods, and chair of its Technology and Business Practice since a January merger with the former 15-lawyer firm of Gordon & Glickson, Mr. Gordon was a 1976 cum laude graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law. He practiced in Los Angeles with Irell & Manella for several years before joining the Chicago firm where his father, George N. Gordon, was a partner. An adjunct professor at The John Marshall Law School, Mr. Gordon was the author of “Computer Software: Contracting for Development and Distribution,” and editor of publications in the information technology area. Mrs. Gordon was the daughter of Michigan attorney Harry Slavin. George Bowman George A. Bowman Jr. of Wilmette, former chief administrative law judge of Social Security Administration hearings and appeals I n Chicago, died July 28 at age 88. A Milwaukee attorney and judge of children's court for several years, Mr. Bowman was not registered in Illinois. He was a Navy flyer during World War II. Karen Bernoteit Retired Springfield attorney Karen L. Barancik Bernoteit died July 16 at age 40 of breast cancer. She was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1992. David Gooder Retired Chicago attorney David MacDonald Gooder died July 22 at age 88 of Alzheimer's disease in the Admiral nursing home. He had lived in Downers Grove for several years. A 1942 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, Mr. Gooder was an Army captain in Germany during World War II. After the war, he joined Lord, Bissell & Brook and also became legal counsel to Oak Brook developed Paul Butler. He served on several Oak Brook development boards and was a member of both the Downers Grove Village Council and Library Board. A supporter of the Theatre of Western Springs for a half-century, Mr. Gooder performed in more than 35 productions, including the lead in “Dial M for Murder.” He founded a Chicago affiliate of Business Volunteer for the Arts in 1985. Survivors include his wife, former Chicago attorney Jean Allard. Lois Gross Lois Gordon Gross, a 1949 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, died in July at age 78. After graduation, she directed a program of teaching the American system of law to visiting German lawyers. In-house counsel for the Toni Home Permanent Hair Care Co. until 1953, Mrs. Gross had a private practice from 1968 to 1978. Survivors include her husband, Lionel G. Gross, a retired partner of Altheimer & Gray. Bufford Hottle Retired 9th Circuit judge Bufford Watson Hottle Jr. died June 20 at age 82 in Phoenix, Ariz. A 1950 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, he had served in the Navy Air V5 Program during World War II. Mr. Hottle began his law practice with John J. Kritzer in Monmouth and was Warren County state's attorney from 1952 to 1960. In private practice for the next 30 years, he was Monmouth city attorney for 12 years. Appointed to the circuit court in 1990, he retired Dec. 7, 1992, and was reappointed Dec. 28. He served until December 1994. Mr. Hottle was past president of the Warren County Prime Beef Festival and Monmouth Exchange Club. He was a founder of the Monmouth Flying Club and the Motor League, the city's first baseball organization for young people. He received a Distinguished Service Award from the Monmouth Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1959. Howard Levin Retired Chicago attorney Howard H. “Bridgie” Levin died in July at age 74. A 1955 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, he was a partner in Berkson, Gorov & Levin for several years. Norman Marcus Retired administrative law judge Norman Lee Marcus died Aug. 2 at age 72 in Deerfield Beach, Fla. He served in the Navy as a youth and was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1968. A former partner in the Chicago firm of McNamara & Marcus, Mr. Marcus later was an ALJ for the Illinois Department of Revenue. Walter Moehle Retired Okawville attorney Walter Edgar Moehle died June 28 at age 90 in Washington County Hospital, Nashville. A 1941 graduate of the Drake University College of Law, he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a special agent and served for 25 years. Leaving the FBI in 1966, Mr. Moehle became an assistant U.S. attorney in Belleville. Later head of the St. Clair County Crime Commission, he helped establish a police academy at Belleville Area College. He was Washington County state's attorney for two terms. Mr. Moehle retired in 1993 as president and board chair of the Old Exchange National Bank in Okawville. Alan Nagel Chicago attorney Alan Steven Nagel died in July at age 53. He was a 1978 graduate of The John Marshall Law School. Joseph O'Halloran Additional information has been obtained about the career of Joseph P. O'Halloran, whose death on July 5 at age 78 of pancreatic cancer in his Cary home was reported in the July issue of the ISBA Bar News. Mr. O'Halloran was a research chemist for the Michigan Chemical Corp. from 1952 until 1957, when he joined Quaker Oats in Barrington. Thirteen years later, when the company could not find a patent attorney who understood chemical processes, it sent Mr. O'Halloran to the Loyola University School of Law, where he graduated in 1967. Except for two years with Chicago law firms, he was patent counsel at Quaker Oats until 1988, when he retired as chief patent counsel. He received a master's degree in art in 1992 from Northern Illinois University. Warren Powers Glenview attorney Warren Earl Powers died July 30 at age 85. A 1952 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, he had served in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Powers was a vice president of First National Bank and Trust of Evanston for more than 25 years. He was a past president of the Arlington Heights American Legion Post. Scott Sherman Chicago attorney Scott Robert Sherman died in July at age 37 of colon cancer. He was a 1995 graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center. Mr. Sherman practiced with his brother, Marc D. Sherman, in Lincolnwood before establishing a Chicago office in real estate and corporate law. Yolande Smallwood Former Chicago attorney Yolande Dianne Smallwood died July 4 at age 39 of injuries from an automobile accident while vacationing in Italy. A 1997 graduate of the Whittier College School of Law, she also had a degree in art history. Miss Smallwood practiced with Win-ston & Strawn and Seyfarth Shaw before joining CAN Surety in 2001 as a claims analyst, She left the insurance company in 2004. LeRoy Welter LeRoy Joseph Welter, a past president of the McHenry County Bar Association, died July 17 at age 92 in his McHenry home. The retired attorney was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1945. Mr. Welter was in the legal department of New York Life Insurance Co. in Chicago for 17 years before entering private practice in McHenry in 1958. He represented McHenry Savings and Loan, and McHenry and Burton Townships in the 1960s. A past president of the McHenry Community High School Board, Mr. Welter was a grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Council and a founder of the McHenry Kiwanis Club. Arthur Woodward Florida attorney Arthur Verner Wood-ward, a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, died June 23 at age 80 on Marco Island. Mr. Woodward received a civil engineering degree after Army Air Corps service during World War II and worked on construction of a Strategic Air Command base in Spain for four years before returning to earn a law degree. He had a labor law practice in Springfield and represented the Illinois Association of General Contractors before moving to Marco Island in 1968 and being admitted to the Florida bar. He practiced until 1986, when he turned the law firm over to his twin sons, Mark J. and Craig R. Woodward, who changed its name to Woodward, Pires & Lombardo. Arthur Woodward later managed a family-owned title company and was president of the North Marco Utility Co. and a board member of Fiddler's Creek Community Development District. |
