Curriculum JMLS continues Czech exchange Jiri Zapletal, a member of the Faculty of Law at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic, returns home this month after a semester of studying copyright and trademark law at The John Marshall Law School. Zapletal is the tenth student in 12 years to attend John Marshall through its Czech Student Exchange Program, which is headed by Prof. Michael P. Seng. Two more Masaryk law students – Lenka Cervenkova and Petra Novotna – have been chosen from 56 applicants to pursue exchange opportunities at John Marshall next fall. Cervenkova, who is interested in business law and intellectual property, has studied at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Novotna, whose interests are in international business and trade law, has studied at the University of Burgundy, Dijon. In addition to the Czech exchange program, a John Marshall student, Daniel Griffin, has spent the past semester at the Economics University in Prague. His counterpart, Marek Benes, will study intellectual property law next spring at John Marshall. “I can think of few things that give me greater pride than when I meet with the alumni of our program and see the contributions they are making to establish the rule of law in their home country,” Prof. Seng said in his year-end appeal for financial contributions. He referred to the Czech student exchange as “a wise investment. By training students who respect and understand the rule of law, we can perhaps avoid some of the tragedies that plagued the 20th Century.” For more information, contact Seng at John Marshall's Czech/Slovak Legal Institute, (312) 987-1446 or 7seng@jmls.edu. Firm funds scholarships Two second-year Illinois law students are the grateful recipients of $15,000 minority scholarships from Katten Muchin Rosenman, Chicago, that include participation in the firm's summer associate program. They are Julie H. Liu of the Northwestern University School of Law and Jeremy C. Daniel of the Loyola University School of Law. Their selections were based on academic achievement, civic and charitable activities, writing skills and leadership potential. |
