Rise J. Terney has been appointed director of legal services for the Coordinated Advice and Referral Program for Legal Services (CARPLS), a Cook County legal assistance hotline for low-income clients.

Previously a staff attorney with the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, Terney also has helped disadvantaged families through the United Way, Vista HealthCare Hospice, and Housing for the Mentally Ill in Evanston.

CARPLS, a grantee of the Illinois Bar Foundation (see story on page 3), handles 23,000 telephone inquiries each year. Staff and volunteers provide immediate legal advice, pro se materials and referrals in a network of legal aid agencies.
