Cy pres funds aid bar charity

Six bar-related charitable organizations will receive cy pres distributions from unclaimed settlement funds in the class action, In re Chicago Sun-Times Circulation Litigation.

Judge Bernetta D. Bush of the Cook County Chancery Division ordered the distribution of $4.9 million among 10 recipients on Nov. 15, along with Presiding Judge Dorothy Kirie Kinnaird and Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans.

Chicago Bar Association affiliates will receive a total of $4 million, including $2 million each for the Chicago Bar Foundation and the Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Lend-a-Hand Program.

Awards of $100,000 each go to the DePaul University College of Law Center for Public Interest Law and the Loyola University Civitas ChildLaw Center.

Awards of $50,000 each go to the Cook County Bar Foundation and the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation legal clinic at Trinity Lutheran Church of Christ.

Other organizations named in the distribution are Children's Memorial Hospital Medical Research Institute ($250,000), Children's Memorial Hospital/Chicago Public Schools Partnership ($100,000), Chicago Communities in Schools ($100,000), and Teach for America ($50,000).

“By targeting a wide range of service organizations to receive cy pres funding, a broad spectrum of citizens in Cook County will stand to benefit,” said Chief Judge Evans.

Judge Bush added that the “settlement presented a tremendous opportunity to reach our underserved populations with badly needed legal assistance and educational resources.”
