Chicago-Kent honors alumni

Burton S. Odelson of Odelson & Sterk, Evergreen Park, received a Distinguished Service Award from the Chicago-Kent College of Law alumni board during its annual luncheon on Nov. 16.

Professional Achievement Awards were presented to Cynthia Y. Cobbs, director of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts; Barry S. Maram, director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, and Raymond J. Werner of Arnstein & Lehr, Chicago.

Receiving Young Alum Awards were Alyssa C. Mogul of Grund & Leavitt, Chicago, and Cathy L. Roth of the Teamsters Central States Pension and Health and Welfare Funds.

Pablo J. Almaguer of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, and Shaena M. Fazal of the Long-Term Prisoner Policy Project of the John Howard Association were given Hon. Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Awards.

Randolph N. Stone, clinical professor at the University of Chicago Law School and former Cook County public defender, received a Distinguished Public Service Award on Dec. 7 during the annual luncheon of the Public Interest Law Initiative in Chicago.

Distinguished Alumni Awards were presented to Eric J. Gorman and Jean Choi, and the law firm of Jenner & Block received the Pro Bono Initiative Award.

Cook County Judge Arnette R. Hubbard was honored Nov. 16 on the 25th anniversary of her service as president of the National Bar Association. The Cook County Bar Association and Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal were sponsors of the reception.

A. Sidney Katz of Welsh & Katz, Chicago, received the Torch of Learning Award from American Friends of the Hebrew University on Nov. 15 during a Midwest Region dinner in Chicago.

Randall E. Mehrberg, executive vice president and chief legal officer of the Exelon Corp. received a Judge Learned Hand Hu--man Relations Award on Nov. 8 during the annual dinner of the Chicago chapter of the American Jewish Committee.

A former partner in Jenner & Block and chair of the Northwestern University School of Law Corporate Counsel Institute, Mehrberg volunteers for several community organizations.

Michael E. Deutsch of the Peoples Law Office, Chicago, was honored Nov. 11 during the annual dinner of the Chicago chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.

The board of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago honored Edward D. Manzo of Cook, Alex, McFarron, Manzo, Cummings & Mehler during a Nov. 16 reception for his editorial work.

Manzo is editor-in-chief of “Claim Con-struction in the Federal Circuit,” which is produced annually by the IPLAC Litigation Committee and is now published by West Legalworks.

 

Generosity recognized

The East Alton-based law firm of SimmonsCooper has been recognized by the St. Louis Business Journal as one of the Most Generous St. Louisans for its contributions to area charities.

SimmonsCooper made a $10.5 million pledge in 2005 to the Southern Illinois University Medical School to fund a cancer institute for prevention and treatment. The Business Journal provided an additional donation, which was accepted by Jeff Cooper of the law firm and Dean Kevin J. Dorsey of the medical school.
