Gala dinner, history book being planned
The Winnebago County Bar Association will commemorate the centennial of its founding with a gala banquet Saturday, March 18, at Giovanni's Restaurant in Rockford. A 6:30 p.m. reception will precede the 7:30 p.m. dinner.
Black tie is optional for the occasion, but “no stuffy speeches, just dining, dancing and drinks,” said President Paul Logli. Fifty-year members will be recognized, and former congressman John B. Anderson will be honored for his role in establishment of the Legal Services Corp.
A history book on the association's first 100 years has been compiled by Stephen A. Ellis and Robert J. Lindvall and is in the process of publication. Copies may be ordered at $25 each.
Although no ongoing celebration of the Winnebago County Bar Centennial is planned, Logli said the year will be marked by implementation of a mediation procedure for people who are involved in small-claims cases in the 17th Circuit.
Judge Rosemary Collins and attorney Donald L. Moore last month announced the circuit's collaboration with the bar association to alleviate the lag of 60 to 90 days for commencement of a small-claims trial.
It is hoped that trained volunteer mediators may be able to achieve same-day resolution of disputes in cases involving less than the $10,000 limit.
