General practice seminar updates emerging issues
Elder law, family law, criminal law, civil practice, probate, real estate, bankruptcy and workers' comp: They're all staples, as usual, of the ISBA Law Ed seminar, Update on Legal Developments for the General Practitioner.
The program will be presented Friday, March 10, at The Chateau in Bloomington by the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section.
Section council chair Dawn R. Hallsten of Mateer & Associates, Rockford, is the moderator. Program coordinator is assistant Cook County state's attorney Julie Ann Sebastian, a member of the section council and ISBA Assembly.
After Hallsten's welcome and introductory remarks at 8:50 a.m., the substantive updates will begin at 9 a.m. with a discussion of elder law issues by ISBA Assembly member Susan Dawson-Tibbits of Peoria, chair of the Elder Law Section Council.
At 9:35 a.m., family law will be presented by ISBA Assembly member Christopher S. Haaff of Gitlin, Haaff & Kasper, Woodstock, a member of the Task Force on Genetics and Human Reproduction.
At 10:30 a.m., an Update on Probate Law and Estate Planning, and overview of emerging issues, will be given by section council member James F. Dunneback of Orland Park.
At 11 a.m., Champaign County Public Defender Randall B. Rosenbaum of Urbana will provide an Update on Criminal Law. He is a member of the Criminal Justice Section Council and president of the Illinois Public Defender Association.
After the 11:45 a.m. luncheon period, the seminar will continue with the following presentations.

Civil litigation forum opens with networking time
A rapid-fire presentation of 14 essential topics in civil litigation awaits ISBA members who attend a pair of sessions of the Law Ed seminar, Update and Overview of Civil Practice and Procedure.

Two ISBA sections will team up to present a pair of Law Ed seminars next month on Planning for Business Disputes and Financial Difficulties.
The Business Advice and Financial Planning Section (BAFP) and Corporation, Securities and Business Law (CSBL) Section will conduct the seminars from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 10, at the ISBA Chicago Regional Office, and Friday, March 31, at the Hawthorn Suites, Bloomington.

Federal bench airs employment practice
The second presentation of the ISBA Law Ed seminar, View from the Bench: Tips for Lawyers in the Civil Practice of Employment Law Cases, will take place from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in the ISBA Chicago Regional Office. Luncheon will be provided.
Speakers are Judges Matthew F. Kennelly and Rebecca R. Pallmeyer of U.S. District Court for the Northern District, Chicago, and Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys.
ISBA Labor and Employment Law Section Council member Kathryn M. Woodward of Greene & Letts, Chicago, is the moderator. Discussion topics follow.
Motions for Summary Judgment: In what cases should they not be filed, and how many statements of fact are too many?
Requests to Admit: How many are appropriate, and what are proper objections?
Over-pleading: It is appropriate to include any possible claim in a complaint, and are sanctions awarded, or should they be, for excessive or frivolous counts to a complaint?
Broad Issues Raised by These Questions: Efficiency of litigation, cost of litigation, ethical considerations, and the difference between federal and state practice in these areas.
In addition to the Labor and Employment Law Section, the seminar is sponsored by the Bar Association of the Central and Southern Federal Districts of Illinois.
E-data concerns present risks to school lawyers
Educational institutions in the 21st Cent-ury face continuous exposure to civil litigation generated by the huge quantities of data they maintain electronically.
This phenomenon places increasing responsibility on attorneys for universities, junior colleges and public schools to know where electronic evidence is stored, how it will be preserved, and how it must be produced for discovery.
The ISBA Education Law Section will expand on these issues in a Law Ed seminar, Legal Issues in Education Law: Focus on Risk Management for Educational Organizations in an Electronic Age, on Friday, Feb. 24, at the Chicago Athletic Association.
