Detainees need library books
The ISBA International and Immigration Law Section is conducting a book-collection drive to obtain reading material for detainees at the Tri-County Justice and Detention Center in Ullin.
Section council member Cindy G. Buys, an assistant professor at the Southern Illinois University College of Law, said students and faculty members have made visits to the detainees to determine whether their legal needs are being met.
They noticed that the available library is inadequate and its contents are outdated. Books have been collected in the Carbondale area and donated to the center during visits by students and faculty.
ISBA members who want to contribute appropriate books for distribution at regional immigrant detention centers may drop them off in the designated box at the Chicago Regional Office on the ninth floor at 20 S. Clark St.
Novels in English and Spanish are especially welcome, Buys said, but works in French, Chinese, Polish and Arabic are also usable. For more information, send an e-mail to
