Foundation awards $3,000 each to 13 law students
The Illinois Bar Foundation has awarded scholarships of $3,000 each to students at 13 law schools. The foundation reviewed 65 applications from second- and third-year students at each eligible school.
Criteria included academic standing, financial need, volunteer and employment experience, extracurricular activities, community involvement, ISBA membership, and intent to practice in Illinois.
The IBF scholars and their schools are:
Chicago-Kent College of Law – Briana Jacobs is active in Horizons for Youth and the American Diabetes Association. A law clerk at Guth, Reinke & Farnan, she plans to focus on commercial and transactional law at a mid-sized firm.
DePaul University College of Law – Jarrett Miller Knox is a law clerk at Steven D. Gertler & Associates and a legal assistant at the Legal Aid Bureau. A former law clerk for the Cook County state's attorney, he is active in the Public Interest Law Association and the Constitutional Rights Foundation.
John Marshall Law School – Kari Beyer is a judicial extern for Judge Bruce W. Black of U.S. Bankruptcy Court. A member of Law Review, she is involved in the Cabrini Green Legal Clinic, the Public Interest Law Council, the Chicago Legal Clinic and the Legal Assistance Foundation.
Loyola University School of Law – Jose Alonso has been involved in Chicago Legal Clinic, Project L.E.A.D. and Holy Cross/IHM College Group. He was a law clerk for the Chicago Department of Buildings and Chico & Nunes.
Northern Illinois University College of Law – Jennifer A. Lindt, a member of Law Review, is involved in the Public Interest Law Society and Women's Law Caucus. She has been a law clerk for the DuPage County state's attorney and plans to begin her career there.
Northwestern University School of Law – Julie H. Liu, a former 8th grade teacher in California, is active in the Asian American Legal Service Clinic and is associate editor of the Journal of International Human Rights. A summer associate at Katten Muchin Rosenman, she plans to become an associate at the firm in September.
Southern Illinois University School of Law – Maggi Wettstein is ISBA law student representative, president of the Women's Law Forum and a member of Inns of Court. A law clerk at the Law Office of John D. Foley, she has clerked for the 1st Circuit in Jackson County and Livingston, Barger, Brandt & Schroeder.
St. Louis University School of Law – Matthew J. Gagnon, who also received a foundation scholarship last year, has been editor of the Journal of Health Law and a member of the Public Interest Law Group and Health Law Association. He was a public benefits project intern for Legal Services of Eastern Missouri.
University of Chicago Law School – Shani A. Fregia is involved in the Legal Forum and is treasurer of the Black Law Students Association. She was a summer associate at Katten Muchin Rosenman.
University of Illinois College of Law – Kristopher R. Davis is active on the Illinois Union board and is president of the Student Senate and the Intellectual Property Legal Society. A summer associate at McAndrews, Held & Malloy and former intern at Webber & Thies, he plans an intellectual property practice in Chicago.
University of Notre Dame Law School – Cordell Carter II, who has a master's degree in public policy and management studies, is an intern at the Notre Dame Legal Aid Clinic. He has been a summer intern for Barnes & Thornburg and the attorney general of Washington state, and is involved in the Student Bar Association and National Black Law Student Association.
Valparaiso University School of Law – Amanda G. Perdue, a member of Law Review, is involved in Court Appointed Special Advocates and mentors students on Chicago's South Side. She was a law clerk at Jenner & Block and Cooney & Conway.
Washington University School of Law – Jonathan Knisley, a member of Law Review, has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Special Olympics. He was a summer associate at Arnstein & Lehr and a law clerk at Kruse, Reinker & Hamilton.
