Other events related to Black History Month include the following.
Dickerson Award
The Chicago Bar Association will present its Earl Burrus Dickerson Award posthumously to past president Donald Hubert during a luncheon Wednesday, Feb. 21, in The Standard Club, Chicago. Call (312) 554-2132 for reservations.
The award recognizes contributions to the justice system and legal profession by outstanding minority lawyers and judges. Hubert died Nov. 27 at age 58 of a heart attack while vacationing in Mexico (ISBA Bar News, December 2006).
“Don Hubert would be the last lawyer in America who would ever want to be idealized but for those of us who knew him, he was the ideal lawyer and we will miss him dearly,” said CBA President Kevin P. Durkin.
A previous recipient of the Justice John Paul Stevens Award, Hubert will be inducted posthumously as a Laureate of the ISBA Academy of Illinois Lawyers on Friday, March 23.
Barristers' Ball
The Cook County Bar Association, the oldest African-American bar in the country, will hold its ninth annual Barristers' Ball black-tie dinner dance from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the historic Grand Ballroom Chicago, 6351 S. Cottage Grove.
Law student scholarships will be presented during the benefit as members enjoy camaraderie and dance music by Class Act Entertainment. Call Yolanda Cannon, (312) 630-1157, for reservations.
