State laws body appoints Sebert

John A. Sebert, former consultant on legal education to the American Bar Association, has been named the first full-time executive director of the Chicago-based National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL).

The organization of more than 350 attorneys, judges, law professors, legislators and government officials who are appointed to draft and promote enactment of uniform laws designed to solve problems common to all states.

Sebert's appointment, effective Jan. 16, was praised by NCCUSL President Howard J. Swibel of Arnstein & Lehr, Chicago.

“John's considerable depth and expertise as a lawyer and administrator make him uniquely qualified to serve,” Swibel said. “Ours is a storied organization dedicated to drafting and enacting uniform laws that better the lives of everyone in this country.”

Before joining ABA, where he was involved in the law school accreditation process, Sebert was a professor and dean of the University of Baltimore School of Law from 1993 to 2000.

A graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, he was a professor at the University of Tennessee College of Law from 1974 to 1993, taking leave to serve from 1990 to 1992 as deputy director of the Association of American Law Schools.
