Sex trafficking among juveniles is Feb. 10 topic

The ISBA Child Law Section has signed on as a sponsor of the American Bar Association CLE program, “Sex Trafficking,” that will be conducted from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Chicago.

The Juvenile Justice Committee of the ABA Section of Criminal Justice is coordinator of the program in the Atlanta Room on the Gold Level of the hotel's West Tower.

Part I will be a discussion of the Sal-vation Army PROMISE Model (Partner-ship to Rescue Our Minors from Sexual Exploitation), a collaboration with the Cook County Juvenile Justice Division.

Topics include activities on behalf of the Salvation Army to combat human trafficking nationally, and development of related training methods.

Part II is a review of Cook County Circuit Court Alternatives to Secure Detention, including the Juvenile Justice Division's nationally recognized approach to reducing chronic overcrowding without compromising public safety.

Speakers will focus on community-based, cost-effective programs that promote pro-social outcomes for minors from multiple high-risk populations. The court also has implemented a continuum of clinical services in response to mental health issues among juveniles.

Panelists include Michael J. Rohan, director of Juvenile Probation and Court Services, and Carmen Casas, deputy chief probation officer and coordinator of the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative.
