‘Welcome Homes' project for vets opens Web site

Operation Welcome Homes, an initiative by an ISBA member to provide free vacations for returning military veterans, now has a Web site that contains details on how others can participate.

Chicago attorney Donald T. Rubin, a member of the State and Local Taxation Section, started the program with his wife. attorney Barbara Winer, and daughter, Becca Rubin, a marketing manager in Virginia.

They donated lodging over the New Year's Eve weekend in Door County for Robert Malik, who served in the Army in Iraq and Kosovo, and his wife, Joanna (ISBA Bar News, December, page 10). Rubin also popped for the Maliks' anniversary dinner.

The Web site, www.operationwelcomehomes.org, describes the project as an opportunity for returning military personnel “to rest, relax and recuperate from their stressful and difficult service overseas” at vacation facilities (or time shares) donated by grateful citizens.

“Although I have heard from a number of lawyers who have seen the articles, I have not received any requests for further information or donation forms,” Rubin said. “I hope that the availability of the information on the Web will make it easier for people to learn about getting involved.”

ISBA members may use the Web site donation form by clicking on “Donate.”
