ABA, ISBA plan government lawyer panels The ISBA Committee on Government Lawyers is a sponsor of a three-part program for public lawyers that will be conducted Friday, Feb. 10, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Chicago. The American Bar Association Govern-ment and Public Sector Lawyers Division also is a sponsor. The schedule of program topics and speakers follows. 10 a.m. to 12 noon – Creating the Best Public Law Office CLE; strategies for ensuring a productive, motivated staff, positive client relations, and successful management techniques. Speakers are Sharon Pandak of Fredericks-burg, Va., and Jorge L. Fernandez of Miami, Fla. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. – Ethical Considerations in Public Sector CLE; special conflicts of government lawyers, scope of representation, attorney-client privilege issues, candor toward the tribunal, supervisory responsibilities, meritorious claims and contentions. Speakers include assistant U.S. attorney Kathryn A. Kelly of Chicago, past chair and newsletter co-editor of the Committee on Government Lawyers, and Jerome Larkin, deputy administrator of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission. Others are Prof. Vincent Vitullo of the DePaul University College of Law; Ruta Stropus, director of attorney recruitment and professional development for the Illinois attorney general, and Sharon Pandak. 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. – Pathways to Success for Women and Minorities in the Public Sector; descriptions by public lawyers of their positions, and discussion of obstacles, encouragement and serendipitous events that helped them. Anne Dewey-Balhiser, president of Women Lead LLC, will be moderator of the panel. A reception will follow the program.
