Retired jurist is Sangamon's legal pioneer

Retired 7th Circuit judge Simon Fried-man became the second recipient of the Sangamon County Bar Association's Harl-ington Wood Jr. Legal Pioneer Award on Nov. 17, a day before his 85th birthday.

Named for the former federal judge who received the inaugural award in 2005, the honor recognizes integrity, humanitarian concern, and dedication to advancement of the principles of justice.

A past president of the Sangamon County Bar, Friedman graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1944. He was a judge from 1972 to 1990, and is of counsel to Brown, Hay & Stephens in Springfield.

Dennis R. Triggs, president of the Peoria County Bar Association, received a Distinguished Citizen Award from the W. D. Boyce Council of Boy Scouts of America during a Nov. 17 benefit that raised $175,000.

Two individuals received Sargent Shriver Equal Justice Awards for distinguished achievement during the Shriver Center's annual dinner last month in Chicago.

Paula E. Boggs, executive vice president and general counsel of Starbucks Coffee Co. was honored for promoting quality legal services to low-income people.

Raul Yzaguirre, past president of the National Council of La Raza and founding executive director of the Center for Community Development and Civil Rights, was recognized for advocacy of legal rights of Hispanic people.

 

Goldstick contribution helps autistic children

The recent $600,000 contribution by Chicago attorney Phillip C. Goldstick and his wife, Beverly, to the University of Illinois was featured on the back cover of the November/December issue of Illinois Alumni.

The endowed Goldstick Initiative for the Study of Communication Disorders in the Department of Special Education is designed to help children with autism and other disorders to bridge communication gaps with their families, train faculty members, and expand research and practice.

A 1953 graduate of the university and a member of its 1952 Rose Bowl football team, Goldstick graduated in 1956 from the DePaul University College of Law and was honored Dec. 5 as an ISBA Senior Counsellor. He is a former state legislator.

Chicago attorney William A. Von Hoene Jr., senior vice president and general counsel of Exelon, was featured in the Dec. 1 issue of Corporate Counsel magazine as a 2006 Trailblazer for development of the company's pro bono initiatives.

Michael J. Hayes Sr. of Bell, Boyd & Lloyd, Chicago, has joined the board of directors of Little City Foundation. He also serves on the boards of the National Conference for Community and Justice and Fenwick High School.

Chicago attorney Robert A. Clifford has been appointed chair of the American Bar Association Committee on Strategic Communications. He is Illinois state delegate to the ABA House of Delegates.

John J. Kurowski of Kurowski, Bailey & Shultz, Swansea, served a seven-week appointment last fall as a visiting professor of law at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland.

He taught a comparative law course on American civil litigation in a senior lawyers visiting faculty program sponsored by the Center for International Legal Studies in Salzburg, Austria.
