Also honored at the Chicago-area alumni luncheon was Prof. David D. Meyer, who was named to the Mildred Van Voorhis Jones Faculty Scholar position for his work at the intersection of constitutional and family law.
Meyer will serve this summer as U.S. co-reporter on family law at the Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law in The Netherlands.
Prof. James P. Carey of the Loyola University School of Law has received a Robert E. Oliphant Service Award from the National Institute for Trial Advocacy in recognition of his dedication and commitment to the organization.
A member of the NITA faculty since 1978 and a Loyola law professor since 1980, Carey is program director of NITA's annual Building Trial Skills Program and director of its Midwest Center for Advocacy.
The Burton Foundation, in association with the Law Library of Congress, honored Prof. Ralph L. Brill of the Chicago-Kent College of Law on June 12 with a Burton Award for Outstanding Contributions to Legal Writing Education.
Founder of the law school's comprehensive legal research and writing program, Brill has been on the Chicago-Kent faculty since 1961. He was associate dean from 1970 to 1973 and acting dean in 1973-74.
An annual award for best brief in the law school's Ilana Diamond Rovner Appellate Advocacy Competition is given in Brill's name. He is co-author of A Sourcebook on Legal Writing Programs.
Brill is a past president of the Association of American Law Schools Section on Legal Writing, Reasoning and Research, and a former director of the Legal Writing Institute and the Association of Legal Writing Directors.
Two 2006 graduates of The John Marshall Law School received significant honors during commencement ceremonies in May.
John Brown received the Elmer C. Kissane Public Service Award and will be given $5,000 when he completes one year with the Cook County state's attorney's office.
Brown performed unpaid 711-license work three days a week for the past year with the Felony Criminal Trials Division. He also was an unpaid law clerk two days a week in the Criminal Enforcement Division of the Illinois attorney general's office.
Isaac Colunga won the Chief Justice John Marshall-Braun Memorial Student Writing Competition with his essay, Ex Parte Bollman: A Federalist's Commitment to Civil Liberty. He received a $1,000 prize.
