Circuit shorts Burke appointed to circuit Dennis J. Burke, a Cook County associate judge since 1997, has been appointed to the circuit court vacancy created by the election of Michael J. Murphy to the Appellate Court. A member of the ISBA Assembly for more than 20 years who also has served on the Board of Governors, Burke was president of the Illinois Bar Foundation from 1998 to 2000. He is a Charter Fellow and Gold Fellow of the foundation. • • • Eugene G. Doherty of Holmstrom & Kennedy, Rockford, was installed June 11 as a judge of the 17th Circuit. Associate Judge Robert C. Lorz of the 12th Circuit has been appointed to the circuit court vacancy of William G. McMenamin, who retired July 4. A judge since 1987, Lorz sits in Will County's 2nd Subcircuit.
Retirements announced Associate Judge Scott Madson of the 13th Circuit in Princeton retired June 30 after 10 years on the bench. A former assistant state's attorney, he is a past president of the Bureau County Bar Association. • • • Judge Gerald F. Grubb of Belvidere in the 17th Circuit, the presiding judge in Boone County, will retire Aug. 1. Associate Judge Nicholas J. Galasso of the 18th Circuit in Wheaton retired June 30 after 12 years on the bench. • • • H. Wayne Russell, chief deputy clerk of the Illinois Supreme Court, retired May 15. During his 48 years on the court staff, beginning in 1959, he has worked with 42 justices. • • • Winnebago County State's Attorney Paul A. Logli, chair of the ISBA Committee on Government Lawyers, has announced that he does not plan to run for re-election when his current term ends next year. Appointed in 1986 when Daniel D. Doyle became a judge, Logli has been elected every four years since 1988. He was an associate judge in the 17th Circuit for six years.
Veteran is honored Retired appellate justice Robert Chapman Buckley is one of 15 American airmen from World War II who were honored May 26 during dedication of a stone memorial in Chelveston, England. The U.S. 305th Bomb Group flew 480 missions over enemy territory from a base in Chelveston, losing 768 men but earning the community's gratitude. Buckley flew 17 missions in B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, primarily over Germany. He and his 14 remaining colleagues enjoyed a reunion and triumphal entrance into the village for the dedication.
Court program lauded Linda Austin, director of court operations in Jackson County, has received the Bill and Mary Chesshire Community Honor for developing a Kids in the Courts program that introduces youngsters to the judicial system and fosters understanding. Presiding Judge William G. Schwartz nominated Austin for the $1,000 award, which was presented July 8 in Chicago by the National Association for Court Management and the National Center for State Courts. |
