Lyons police chief earns award from ISBA Lyons Police Chief Daniel Babich received an ISBA Law Enforcement Award on June 19 during a ceremony in the village hall. He was nominated by Russell W. Hartigan, a member of the ISBA Board of Governors and a Lyons Township trustee. A member of the police department since he was discharged from the Marine Corps in 1982, Babich was appointed chief five years ago after working his way up the ranks. During his tenure he has obtained $300,000 in grants for equipment and training, and spearheaded a $7 million referendum to provide a modern police station. He implemented the first regional emergency plan for school personnel to protect students and staffs during high-level threats, and constructed a computerized mobile command vehicle to handle major incidents on-site and maintain hands-on control. Taking a proactive approach toward solving crimes and arresting drug dealers, Babich has accomplished more in five years that any other time in department history. He received a Technology and Innovation Award last October from the DesPlaines Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America. An avid bow expert, he has participated in archery competitions, helped children learn to shoot, and hunted in Alaska, Canada and Africa. Law Enforcement Awards are presented each year by the ISBA to recognize the bond shared by the bar, bench and law enforcement community in achieving the goal of serving the public and ensuring justice fairly and impartially. Emphasis is placed on conduct that promotes justice and distinguishes officers whose public service brings honor and respect to the criminal justice system. |
