CCBA, CBA install slates

Chicago attorney Deborah J. Fortier, deputy chief legal advisor to the Cook County recorder of deeds, will be installed Friday, June 23, as president of the Cook County Bar Association.

Fortier, a former Illinois State Bar As-sociation staff member, will take the oath of office during the association's 92nd annual dinner in the Crystal Ballroom in the West Tower of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Chicago.

A 6 p.m. reception will precede the 7 p.m. dinner and program. Call (312) 630-1157 for reservations.

Keynote speaker for the annual event will be U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney, a Democrat from Georgia's 4th Congressional District.

Several individuals will be honored, including Diane M. Shelley, who will receive the Judicial Award. An attorney with the Water Reclamation District, she won a judicial subcircuit primary election in March and is unopposed for election in November.

Among others are John H. Stroger Jr., president of the Cook County Board, the J. Ernest Wilkins Award; Doris Lewis, the Harold Washington Award, and State Rep. Constance A. Howard, the William R. Ming Jr. Award.

A memorial tribute will be given for former State Rep. Lovana S. “Lou” Jones, who died May 8.

CBA installs Durkin

Kevin P. Durkin of the Clifford Law Offices will be installed as president of the Chicago Bar Association during its 133rd annual meeting Thursday, June 22, in the Standard Club.

He will receive the Lincoln Gavel from retiring President Michael B. Hyman at the event, which begins with an 11:30 a.m. reception and 12:15 luncheon. Call (312) 554-2057 for reservations.

Advocates Society

Chicago attorney Joan E. Smuda, a past president of the Advocates Society, will be installed in August for a two-year term as president of the national organization of Polish-American lawyers. The annual meeting will take place in Hershey, Pa.

Asian American Bar

Assistant Illinois attorney general Maria Kuriakos Ciesil of Chicago was installed June 7 as president of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Chicago Area. Attorney General Lisa Madigan was keynote speaker at the annual reception.

Other officers are President-elect Anne L. Shaw, Secretary Sharon Hwang and Treasurer Jessica Arong O'Brien. Past president is Rishi Agrawal.

Central Illinois Paralegal

Three lawyers will speak to the Central Illinois Paralegal Association during a reception and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, at Bennigan's in Champaign. They are Traci E. Nally on real estate law, Deborah Frank Feinen on domestic violence, and Charles M. Feinen on administrative law.

Decalogue Society

Elgin attorney Martin P. Moltz, deputy director of the 2nd District Office of States Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor, was installed June 7 as president of the Decalogue Society of Lawyers. He succeeds Shellie Karno.

Other officers are Vice Presidents James Shapiro and Scott Gertz, Secretaries Barry Goldberg and Andrea Schleifer, and Treasurer Joshua Kreitzer.

Lifetime Achievements Awards were presented to Chicago attorney Gerald S. Schur and retiring Cook County Judge Stuart A. Nudelman. ISBA Assembly member Stephen G. Baime was given a Hebrew University Perpetual Fellowship Award, and Barbara Leff received an Intra Society Award.

DuPage County Bar

Franklin County Bar

During the Law Day luncheon of the Franklin County Bar Association at Rend Lake, the Liberty Bell Award was presented to Vic Kretz for his longtime support in a variety of ways for community service projects in Christopher. It was his 75th birthday.

Illinois Judges

Cook County Associate Judge Jesse G. Reyes, a member of the ISBA Assembly, was installed June 2 as president of the Illinois Judges Association during a reception at the Chicago Bar Association. He succeeds 2nd Circuit Judge James M. Wexstten.

Other officers are Vice Presidents Mark A. Scheuring, James R. Epstein and Ronald D. Spears; Secretary Jane L. Stuart, and Treasurer Mary Seminara Schostok.

Intellectual Property Law

Debbie K. Wright of Kraft Foods was installed May 17 president of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago. She succeeds Mark I. Feldman of DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary.

Other officers are President-elect James R. Sobieraj, Vice President Joseph E. Shipley, Treasurer Jeffrey B. Burgan and Secretary Steve Feldman. The Inventor of the Year Award was presented to Arun Wagh of Argonne National Laboratory.

Jewish Judges

Retiring Cook County Judges Edward R. Burr and Stuart A. Nudelman will be honored by the Jewish Judges Association during a luncheon Wednesday, June 28, at Petterino's Restaurant, Chicago. Call (312) 804-0657.

Association members also will celebrate the appointment of President Robert E. Gordon of the Cook County Circuit Court to the Illinois Appellate Court, 1st District.

Kankakee County Bar

Bourbonnais attorney Robert J. Gerts was honored by the Kankakee County Bar Association as Prairie State Legal Services Volunteer of the Year during the annual Law Day luncheon.

Madison County Bar

The Madison County Bar Association presented a Liberty Bell Award to Sheriff Robert Hertz during a Law Day program May 1 in Edwardsville. Hertz chairs the Law Enforcement Committee of the Family Violence Coordinating Council and is involved with the Child Advocacy Center in Wood River.

Northwest Suburban Bar

Arlington Heights attorney Cary A. Lind and State Sen. Wendell Jones will receive President's Awards for Distinguished Public Service during the annual dinner of the Northwest Suburban Bar Association on Wednesday, June 28, at the Metropolis Ballroom.
