Chief Richard Farthing of the Roxana Police Department received an ISBA Law Enforcement Award on May 1 during the Madison County Bar Association's Law Day ceremony in Edwardsville.
The award was presented by Dennis J. Orsey of Granite City, a member of the ISBA Board of Governors. Orsey called the presentation a “cause for celebration and pride,” since only two Law Enforcement Awards were presented this year in the entire state.
Farthing was nominated by 3rd Circuit Judge Barbara L. Crowder, vice chair of the ISBA Bench and Bar Section Council, and assistant Madison County state's attorney Micah Summers.
Crowder cited his involvement with the Family Violence Coordinating Council that has included development of an information packet for police officers who intervene in domestic violence situations while maintaining the safety of parties.
Summers added that Farthing “was a key player in helping receive funding for the Madison County Child Exchange Center,” a safe place where individuals can arrange for visitations without violent confrontations.
“In sum, Chief Farthing's efforts and activities go well beyond the requirements of his job,” Crowder said. “He specifically improves the image of law enforcement by his volunteer work and his public and private support of victims.”
