Bar Foundation allots $234,900 in statewide grants The $12,000 grant to the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women's Network that is detailed in the story below is one of 27 – totaling $234,900 - that were approved in April by the Illinois Bar Foundation board. Other recipients are: A Woman's Fund ($5,000), based in Urbana, for domestic violence victims in Champaign, Douglas, Ford and Piatt Counties. BUILD Inc. ($5,000), a project to rehabilitate the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. Cabrini Green Legal Aid Clinic ($15,000) in Chicago, for volunteer training of pro bono attorneys and law students. Center for Prevention of Abuse ($10,000) in Peoria, an advocacy program for violence victims petition courts for orders of protection. Coordinated Advice and Referral Program for Legal Services ($20,000), a Cook County legal assistance hotline. Chicago Legal Advocacy for Incarcerated Mothers ($5,000), for on-site legal aid and client education. Chicago Legal Clinic ($7,500), to establish an Expedited Child Support Division Desk for underserved individuals. Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation ($10,000), in support of a Chancery Court Access to Justice Program for pro se litigants. Court Appointed Special Advocates ($5,000) for expansion of a Peoria County Juvenile Court program. Constitutional Rights Foundation ($10,000), a Chicago-based statewide Equal Justice Under Law educational program for students. Crisis Center for South Suburbia ($5,000), based in Tinley Park, for domestic violence victim counseling and advocacy. Crisis Center Foundation ($5,400) in Jacksonville, serving Cass, Greene, Morgan and Scott County domestic violence survivors. Family Rescue ($8,000) of Chicago, in support of a Court Advocacy Program of services and shelter for domestic violence victims. First Defense Legal Aid ($10,000), for around-the-clock legal assistance to individuals in Chicago police custody. Illinois CASA ($8,000), for a Web-based Community Awareness Program in 29 local service areas. Illinois Coalition for Equal Justice ($5,000), to develop a downstate Pro Bono Conference for expanding volunteer service to low-income clients. Illinois Judges Association ($8,750), in support of stipends for needy laws students in a Judicial Intern Opportunity Program. Illinois Legal Aid Online ($17,500), in support of a Statewide Website Content Management Project for legal aid advocates and pro bono volunteers. Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation ($9,750) in East St. Louis, for community outreach to low-income residents of 65 Southern Illinois counties. Lee/Carroll/Ogle County CASA ($4,000) in Dixon, for volunteer recruitment and training of representatives for abused children. McLean County Child Protection Network/CASA of McLean County ($4,000), to support expansion into Livingston County. Mutual Ground Inc. ($5,000) of Aurora,for its Domestic Violence Legal Court Advocacy Program in 16th Circuit courthouses in Kane and Kendall Counties. Prairie State Legal Services ($20,000) in Rockford in support of its Telephone Counseling Service for low-income clients in 35 Northern and Central Illinois counties. Sarah's Inn ($5,000), based in Oak Park, for a Legal Advocacy Program for domestic violence victims in Cook County's 4th Municipal District. Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law ($5,000), Chicago-based statewide Safe Homes Initiative for housing protection of domestic violence victims. Will County Legal Assistance Program ($10,000) in Joliet, for expansion of legal services to low-income and senior citizen residents. Peoria attorney Elizabeth Jensen, a member of the ISBA Board of Governors, chaired the grant screening committee this year. Members include ISBA Second Vice President Jack C. Carey; John G. Locallo of the Board of Governors; Dennis J. Beninato, John W. Damisch, Howard W. Feldman, Thomas M. Harris Jr., Lori G. Levin, George F. Mahoney III, John L. Nisivaco, Christine M. Ory and Debra B. Walker. The Bar Foundation has set an annual deadline of Oct. 1 for grant applications. The approved grants are determined by the board and announced in April.
