New year of challenges faces bar leaders

The Illinois State Bar Association will begin its new fiscal year with a fresh slate of officers and renewed energy to improve the image of the profession and provide even better continuing legal education opportunities.

Joseph G. Bisceglia of Chicago will be installed as president during the 131st ISBA Annual Meeting at The Abbey Resort in Fontana, Wis.

Joining him in leadership of the state bar will be President-elect Jack C. Carey of Belleville, Second Vice President John G. O'Brien of Arlington Heights, and Third Vice President Mark D. Hassakis of Mt. Vernon.

Scheduled Thursday, June 21, through Saturday, June 23, the annual meeting offers educational programs, business meetings, networking receptions, exhibitors and award presentations.

The Annual Meeting begins Thursday with business meetings and the opening reception sponsored by the ISBA Mutual Insurance Co.

Law Ed seminars are Civil Practice Update and Family Law Update on Friday, and “Uninsured/Underinsured: The Necessary Basics,” a Saturday presentation of the Insurance Law and Tort Law Sections and Young Lawyers Division.

Another learning opportunity is the Friday breakfast symposium, “Marketing on a Shoestring: How to Make More Money by Bringing in Paying Clients,” by the Committee on Law Office Management and Economics.

Friday noon, several members will be honored for professional achievement during the annual awards luncheon. The annual banquet Friday night will include remarks by Bisceglia and retiring president Irene F. Bahr, and entertainment by the Ken Arlen Orchestra.

On Saturday, the Committee on Women and the Law and Committee on Minority and Women Participation will hold their 12th annual networking breakfast, and a continental breakfast for spouses and children will be available.

The ISBA Assembly will conduct its semi-annual meeting on Saturday, wrapping up the three-day convention.
